Headers n all.....

I'm sure its been discussed adnausium but the search was little help so I apologize in advance.... I have a stock 2011 2SS/RS M6 w/ GMPP axel backs. I'll be adding a CAI, Inc CAI W/Scoop next. My next logical step is headers and everything down line. How do I pick the best system? Has there been a dyno comparo done (similar to the ones Jantrey did on the CAI's)? If so, link please? My car is my daily driver (100 miles a day, mostly freeway and 75MPH) so some muffling is necessary but I do love the sound of a motor (really miss my old Harley with straight pipes but that's a different story...). Anyway, your guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Honestly I have 3 buddies with ss's and we all are running the same mods except headers. We all went a different way on them. One kooks one dynatech one mbs. Mbs is the cheaper of the three by far. Less than a 1/3 of the price. The kooks made the most power on the dyno but surprisingly the mbs made second and only 4 hp behind the kooks. And each car sounds bad ass. Can't even tell the one with the cheap headers vs the ones with 1300 dollar headers. Hope that helps u out

They tested the tubing size of the primaries. 1 7/8's proved the best overall. 1 3/4 giving up only 2-3hp and 2" showing little better than the 1 7/8's unless going all out for big hp. As for which? It comes down to budget and materials. They all pretty much perform very close to each other. So it's a matter of what type you want.

As has been mentioned, all the LT headers seem to be within a few HP. The most popular size 1 7/8 primaries. They range in price from about $400-$1200. The higher priced ones are typically American made and come from Kooks, ARH, and Dynatech. The Cheaper ones are Pacesetters, OBX, and MBS. Not sure where to place Texas Speed headers but they are a great value as well. There are a few other brands out that come in between the cheaper and more expensive ones.

Exhaust is pretty much what sound you like. Some are known to drone and some are hit/miss. Like mentioned above, J pipes will prevent drone and the Dynomax VT mufflers also prevent drone. A few of the other systems are less prone to drone. Seeing that you drive 100miles/day and cruise in the prime drone range, you'll need to pick your system carefully. Droning will make for an awful long daily commute. There is little if any HP to gained by anything downstream of the cats and is considered a sound mod only. That goes for catbacks, axlebacks, muffler swaps, or muffler deletes.

Just ordered the Texas Speed LT headers (304 Stainless), High Flow Cats, and O2 Sensor Extensions for $782.00 shipped. Tough to beat that!

We recommend Kooks. I have used them on our cars, and installed them on customers cars, and they have not let us down. If you have questions, give us a call.

Most of the well known brands are all in a dead heat in terms of performance and quality. As long as you stick with one of them you will not be disappointed. Here is a link to an article on our blog that has some good info on what to look out for from a technical perspective when selecting headers. Everyone has their favorite, typically because that is either what they have or that is what they sell, but the article should give you some help in selecting what is right for you. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up.

All LTs are gonna be the same HP wise its pretty much gonna come down to how much you want to spend. I just installed OBX's and I love'em. Good luck!

Here are a few features to look for when buying headers-
  • Merge Spike in the collector
  • Merge Collector
  • Primary welded to flange both inside and outside
  • Primary Blended into flange.
  • One piece primarys- Some places weld multiple lengths togethor because they are using a bender that cannot make the complicated bends.
  • Front and Rear O2 Sensor bungs so you are not removing O2 sensors
  • Ball and socket collector at the mid pipe connection. This costs more for the manufacturer, but I love them because they do not leak like slip fits do, and allow some flexibility
  • American Sourced 304 stainless construction..no funky alloys sourced from weird places.
  • All Hardware including gaskets, O2 extensions, and stainless bolts
  • Lifetime warranty
One of the reasons we sell and promote Kooks is because it does have all of this, and even more when you jump up to a stepped header (like an extra O2 bung for wideband). Each little item works towards making the best header possible, which is what I think everyone wants. Now shops and vendors are gonna promote whatever they get the best deal on. Customers are gonna promote whatever they bought, or whatever fits their budget. But if you buy headers from a pure features prospective, you will see that bvery few headers and match all of the items listed above.

Kooks, Corsa and MarylandSpeed For the ultimate in sound, HP, quality and price.

Plus you will be scaring small children and old folks at WOT with no drone at cruising speeds.

The drag strip is like sniffing glue, it's cheap, it's a decent buzz, it doesn't last long and they are all the same.
Road racing is like China White Heroin, the buzz is stronger, the high lasts for hours, it's extremely addictive and they are all different.
I can't wait for my next
Track fix.
