Borla S not loud enough

I listened to the sound clips and got the axlebacks for my L99. Had them on a few months and quite frankly, just not enough there. I guess I should have gone with the ATAK huh?

Any suggestions for improving the sound a bit?

Headers and or high flow cats are the ONLY thing that is going to give you sound you really want! Even my 1 chambers sounded mild with the stock cats. Installed headers and its a beast! I had striaght pipes with the stocks cats as well, still pretty tame to my ears.

Gotcha...thanks. I was considering getting the LTs done by ECS in the coming month or so.
My cousin has a 2011 mustang GT with a roush exhaust and I can't believe how loud his is. Mine sounds like a kitten!

The S-type sounds awesome with headers, but like you said, way too quiet without. I had the ATAK at first and it's the best sound you can get IMHO with the stock manifolds/cats. The problem comes when you add headers to the ATAK. It's raspy and obnoxious, and NOT in a good way!

Yes.....add LT headers.

Doesn't have to be ARH though. Pretty much all the LTs will give you the same sound.

i would only get S type if i was getting headers. other wise you need Atak without headers to get a decent sound.

First off, I went axle back.. then cat back...then headers. Axle back will really only improve the tone, volume won't increase much. The Xpipe from Borla to complete the cat back system, will help a little bit... but as others have stated, headers is what you need.

ATAK for a car with no flows or headers
S-type with headers. The sound is incredible.

Many owners complained about ATAK once LTs were install.

Once you get headers you will fall in love with the car all over again... 6 months later you will want more (again), and will do a cam swap.

I told myself I would stop at exhaust....trust me, you won't. Be prepared to dump your wallet.

Headers are the way to go for volume and power.

I put the S-type on within two weeks of owning the car with the intention of getting headers and cats down the road. Three months later I put the headers on and man what a difference. I'm glad that I chose middle of the road sound because above 75 MPH things are way loud inside the cabin now. But the car sounds great and I wouldn't have been happy if I kept it stock or even gone with the Borla Touring.

If you are not gonna get headers you want the Atak. If you are gonna get headers, you want the Stinger. The stock cats really quiet the exhaut down.

thanks a bunch everyone. I am planning on the headers so I think I will hold onto the s then.

On a side note...is there any point in replacing the resonators with the x-pipe? I have heard mixed thoughts on this before.

Sometime next week I will be driving my car down to the shop for install of my American Racing Headers and a Livernoise cam.

I planned ahead when purchasing my S-type, I knew that ARH and new CAI would change everything about the sound. I was trying to go for waking the neigbors up, not the entire block.

On another note: I heard my same set up with a Corsa catback instead, and it sounds outstanding.

replacing with Borla's Xpipe slightly increased volume and tone. Wait until you do headers to do this so you can tune out AFM if you haven't already.

Remember you want / "need" a tune after install. Even if people argue you don't "need" it, you will want to wear ear plugs after hearing how loud AFM is with headers if you refuse to tune.

Here's a video with my car with the Borla S type and 1 7/8" ARH w/ HF cats. You're gonna have to excuse the poor quality, but my neighbor across the street says he loves my exhaust since it essentially serves as his alarm clock lol. I leave in the mornings the same time he wakes up for work, and he said he can feel it in his chest when I start my car in the mornings!
