TSP 229/236 cam Dyno'd

Just got my car back after getting a tsp 229/236 112 lsa cam. Also got a tap underdrive pully kit. Dyno tuned at newtech performance. Got 452 hp / 422 tq. I told em to keep the tune safe as this is my daily driver. It's pretty loud with muffler deletes and long tubes, but I'm real happy with the sound. I don't even wanna keep it in gear anymore, I just wanna idle down the street lol. Already ordered some magnaflow bullet mufflers to help quiet it down some. I'll post better videos and before/after once I install the bullets. Thanks to camaro5 for all the help as I researched my setup.

-When I'm driving 40 and I let off the gas and put it in neutral, the car revs up 1,600 rpm's or so then drops to idle (900). Is this normal?

-Getting a little bucking/surging in 1st gear sometimes around 1100 rpm's in a parking lot, normal with a cam?

That's a healthy cam. You'll get a bit of low speed bucking.

'Sounds normal to me, based on my experience. It takes some getting used to but you'll love it (I can tell already).

cam are suppose to bounce around a little. mine doesn't get that high though for most of the time. it will bounce around 1k then settle down. but not every tune and cam is the same.

give it some time & make some notes, you can give your notes to the tuner & I bet he can help that 1600 to 900rpm surges!

No, needs more tuning work.

At very low RPM in first gear, a minor surge could be in the tune, and it actually could also be in your cold air intake...some intakes cause a little bit of air turbulence around the MAF sensor, which results in a buck...sometimes even with the stock cam.

It may be possible to make it a bit better with tuning, but 1100 RPM might never go away.

That 1600 surge is a tune issue.... get it checked out.

Yep. I had that exact same problem with my new era intake so I switched to a CAI --problem solved.

Well I talked to my tuner and he said that revving up to upper 1k rpm's is something to avoid the car turning off but it's set too high or something. I dunno, gonna get it cleaned up in a few days. Is it safe to drive around with that. I assume it's not a big deal.

I'm real happy with this cam and love the sound!

need to get some tuning work!!! A good tuner will be able to tune the biggest cam with little to zero surging...takes time and lots of expierence but can be done!

same cam and had the same issue, it is to help the cam catch idle when the load is suddenly taken off the engine. Yours is excessive, mine is tuned down and will surge up to 1000 then come to idle. When you take it back make sure they tune it out with the clutch in and out as there are 2 different settings based on that variable.

nice power, I have the same mods and pull 462/424

What's your idle set to? He set me at 900 rpm

Yea today I threw it in neutral and it revved to 2k dropped to idle, then to 1200, then back to idle. Thanks for the input, this cam stuff is new to me.

idle at 750-800 hard to tell on that guage when my car is warmed up i will get some surging below 10 mph, when it is cold it is much more noticable basicly you just need to learn to throttle and coast in parking lots. if you bother your tuner enough they will make it drive perfectly just to be left alone

Here's a video of cold start idle, pretty raspy and got the neighbors shaking their heads.

Here's a picture of the magnaflow (magnapack?) bullet mufflers I had put on. They took away the raspiness and gave it a way better tone. I wish I coulda left it alone but i felt it was too loud for the neighborhood and the cops. I only paid 72 bucks for each muffler and 80 to get them welded on. I'm so glad I didn't go with chokemasters, droning borlas, and the magnaflow 3 inch comp catback is way too pricey (1300?!). I'll post a video of my newest exhaust setup soon. Thanks again c5

Video with 14" magnaflow bullet mufflers. Not a cold start, just an idle video. Ignore the kids that were passing by.

The noise is the exact reason why I don't want to get a cam or do any real exhaust work. Maybe I'm getting old, but I like my car to be fast and quiet. Also I'm an EXTREMELY light sleeper and any noise will wake me up. So I can totally feel for your neighbors. Which is also another reason why I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Btw, did you the install? If not, how much did it run you? How much did newtech charge for the tune and how long did it take them?

they had quoted me $1300 for the install w/ tune but they said a trunion upgrade was going to take up another hour or so of shop time, so it came out to $1550 total. I got a 3 bolt cam with a buncha supporting parts like katech chain, gaskets, bolts, melling oil pump, underdrive pulley. I dropped it off Monday before they closed and picked it up Thursday afternoon to see the dyno tune. So it took them Tuesday and a bit of Wednesday, they said they had to let something heat cycle overnight or whatever which is why I had to get it the next day.

My tuner said after he was done that he didn't wanna mess with it too much after just getting a cam swap. He said to see how it drives for a few days and to come back to clean the tune up. If he fixes a few bugs in my tune after the next visit then I definitely recommend their shop. The installer (Josh) is very knowledgable and I've always heard some good things about their tuner (Nick). My last dyno tune left my car running like a champ, long tubes and CAI pulled me 410hp/408 tq. on a safe tune.

so there is really small gain in power with this cam, what only 42whp? You got very strong numbers from the begging though
