Best way to loosen up V8?

Just swapped out my 2010 V6 for a 2012 V8... got it last night ...wow! Anyway, just wondering if there are any tips on getting the most out of the engine? I know years ago there used to be better ways to loosen up engines depending on how you drive during the intial "run in" mileage

I raced mine at the track the first weekend I owned it. My 500 mile break-in consisted of 300 miles highway, to and from the track, 10 1/4 mile passes, and the rest around town.

I recommend doing your first oil change early, 500-1000 miles that's about it.

you don't need a gas pedal.. treat it as if it were a 'on" and "off" switch .. full on or full off, no in between.

That should get it loose in no time. Me personally I don't want to get mine too loose.


All kidding aside you don't want to beat the $hit out of it .. but vary the RPM's thru the full range from time to time and you'll be good.

there a bunch of threads on this and a couple different opinions. I beat it up on the test drive, but took it easy for next 1000 miles after that. Changed the oil and burned out to near redline in 4 gears. I still have that perma-grin!

Worked for me... on the "fast list".

I just learned this, but do the 5/20 fuse pull. Basically you pull the #5 & #20 fuses and let the car sit for a few hours. This will reset your computer to recognize higher octane fuel if there's ever been lower grades used in it. I noticed the difference. You never know what the dealership put in it. Take that as a $free.99 mod. Thanks InfernoLS3.

Find a road with lots of twisty's and up and down hills. You get the compression going up hills and pulling out of corners. Then let it decel on the down hills and into tight corners. That will seat the rings best. Compression and decompression. Make sure you get losts of oil changes. Cheap insurance and gets the little break in particles out! Enjoy it!!!

Did not go over 5K RPM for about the first 800 miles. Changed oil at 800 miles and again at 1500 miles. Also changed rear end fluid at 1500 miles.

that is true when you are building a NEW engine, to set the rings, etc...

these engines are already dyno tested before they are put into cars... they are good to go from day one of you bringing the car home


no need for an early oil change, etc.
