A history of Camaro 1/4 mile times...

I decided to put together a list of Camaro 1/4 mile times across the generations. All times are stock Camaro test numbers from Car and Driver:

2010 SS - 13.1@109
1968 Z28 - 13.77@107.39
1999 Z28 - 13.8@104
2010 LT/V6 - 14.5@99
1983 Z28 - 15@93
1999 RS/V6 - 16.1@87
1985 Berlinetta - 17@81

They're missing a test for the 1997 Camaro SS-LT4 @ near 13-flat...and the '68 Z/28 listed was a Cross Ram/2X4s and a cowl plenum and headers vs. a 12.5:1 Tunnel Port 302 '68 Mustang (both thinly disguised Trans Am racers).

Yes...I thought that looked odd. Stock trim was more in the mid/upper 14's

Speaking of disguises, is this another attempt at a thread about V6 motors/haters? I see that you neatly tucked in a few non V8 platforms in there.

Seems he was trying to do the opposite and avoid ignoring certain models just because they had V6's. They're also Camaro's and should be on the list. In addition, since there are many 5th Gen V6 Camaro owners on this board, it gives them a chance to comparfe their car to some of the older gens just as the V8 owners can. At least that's the way I read it.

the LS1 was a lot faster than 13.8. they rated its times and its horsepower as such to boost vette sales. my LS1 was nearly stock and rated at 300hp at the FLYWHEEL and i dyno'd 323 REAR WHEEL with an intake and cutout only. and my LS1 was faster than my current LS3. i'd say realistically the 1/4 mile time is closer to the 13.0 mark.

if we want to make this a thread that has any negative (read: realistic) considerations for v6s in comparison (which btw i don't think the OP was trying to do), it's a great observation to see that the current v6 and LS1 had similar HP but staggeringly different times in the 1/4 mile. just goes to show what weight can do to a car.

What about the big block 396, 427 copo, 427 ZL1? What were those times?

It's even quicker today with modern rubber. Those tires are 60s rubber. Probably low 13s today.

You gotta look at the trap speeds. Those cars had acceleration thy couldn't use.

It's another tread trying to help your insecurity of owning a V6 by telling us how fast the old ones were. Remember though, those cars had motors impressive compared to everything else being sold at the time. Can't say the same for the new V6.

His thread about V6's yesterday was locked so this is his response. Total flame bait and I'll bite: The 5th Gen V6 is not the 4th fastest Camaro no matter how you configure your past 1/4 mile times list. Higher HP does not always equate to faster times.

That's a very good point. And I'd rather have a '68 Z28 than a V6 any day. Hell, I'd rather have it than my 2SS!!!

This time is out of whack with other road tests of the day. 14.5 @ 102 is more like it. That 107+ MPH indicates this car could run 12s. Not happening with stock Z28s from 68-69.

That particular time is from the iconic Tunnel Port 302 Mustang versus the Z28. It is probably the coolest comparison ever. It's a fun read:

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...ved-comparison

Keep in mind both cars were ringers. The Z28 had the off road cam (and maybe more), long tubes, along with the race dual carb setup and tuned to the teeth. The Tunnel Port Mustang was a car you could not buy and breathed on by the factory. A no holds barred factory shootout.

Part of the Z28 legend comes from this test. It pays to cheat.

Some slow times on there, magazines never get it all out of the car. I know the record for a stock LS1 is 12.8x and that came from a mustang group testing it! I'm sure the other cars could do better than the times listed too.

If this is about being insecure about owning a V6, sorry bud it ain't the cream of the crop. Might be fast for what it is, which is impressive but there's still faster models out there including 14 year old F-body's.

Your picturing glass half empty.
Try picturing glass half full next time.

The original premise was "magazine-published then-current times" from one source: CandD.

Here's a listing sure to gather some comments...again, times are from back in the day...

At least ONE "ringer"...the #3 6-Pack Road Runner was "prepped" AND driven by Ronnie Sox ("Mr. 4-Speed" a.k.a. The Boss)! At least 1/2 a second quicker than any other mag. test of the day!! See #17 for a comparison...

Fraxum et al, see posts #2 and #3...

That ZL1 was a Milford Mule...headers, slicks etc. High Performance Cars tested one on F70X14s, and got a 13.16 @ 110. See the Fastest 50, above...#6.

yeah, the 4th gen LS1 is a very misunderstood monster. it wasn't as misunderstood 10 years ago, but i guess that's because we've introduced 10 more generations of drivers on the road since. that's okay, if you ask me i would like the OP to continue to think he/she can match an LS1 Z or TA and find out for himself/herself
