Granatelli LS coils....should I be skeptical?

I decided to buy a set of the Granatelli LS Series coils; I received them today. After comparing them to the stock coil, they appear to be identical in every way except the GMS sticker on one and AC Delco embossed logo on the other; they are the same exact size, shape, and within 1 gram in terms of weight.

Moreover, it looks like they filed off the area where the "AC Delco" name is embossed on the stock coil. Here are a few close up pictures.

I hate thinking they simply took an AC Delco coil and rebranded it as their own. Anyone have some insight on these?

can't say for sure but wouldn't surprise me. Companies have been doing this for years for all kinds of products.

Let me ask - what was your deciding factor or reasoning to can the OEM coils & to purchase the GMS coils?

Obviously, they offer something you were after.....???

They claim to generate 2X the voltage over the OEM coils. I have twin turbo's and I've been experiencing intermittent miss fires at 12+psi of boost. So, I'm upgrading my entire ignition system (coils, plugs, and wires).

Send them back.

I'd say you're certainly right about being the same coils with the AC Delco filed or milled off...

+1 on sending them back, I would get second and third opinions on your spark plug gap, and heat range before using these coils. It's just as bad as a ported throttle body!

Agreed...and the tune may need some work...look at the dwell time.

If you really want a good read on coils for LS engines, there is some good info on LS1Tech, but there is a LOT of better info on yellowbullet. Read what 427 (Kurt Urban) has to say...he knows a thing or 2 (or 2 million).

Can't comment on the GMS coils but i'd check with a trusted shop to see what the possible problems could be. We have many shops on here that would be more than willing to chat with you. Jannetty is always on here and is always more than willing to help out with a PM.

Give Granatelli a call and see what they say. Could be they are using the same case ,but have changed out some internals.

I'm guessing they just use the same supplier for the casing.

I would think they would use the same supplier for the casing. It would be to costly for them to make one just for themselves. Just like people it's what's inside that counts. lol

Oh wow. If all of the above is true, this was a fairly classless way to handle a vendor dispute.

How else would you get them to mount in the same place. It needs to have the three F's. Fit, Form and Function. Some may say 4 F's with Feel. DOesn't need to be bigger to be improved upon.

Yes, that is the response I received from GMS today. I hated questioning their integrity but I've been burned by inflated vendor claims in the past and the dimensional similarities between these and the AC Delco coil raised a red flag for me.

I'll give themm a try and report back, hopefully with good news!

Well, no one said it was expected to be bigger; just that being the identical shape with a filed off logo raises suspicions.

MSD offers a coil that's not identical in size and shape or color; just sayin. I chose the GMS coil because of the high voltage rating, although I like the concept of the MSD triple fire technology.

Why do you need upgraded coils?

The factory coils are more then sufficient for 99% of the users on this forum and there is no real added benefit for most consumers.

Good luck on your quest, if your truly in doubt bench test the coils through a local alternator/coil/distributor rebuilder ect.

Specially this one particular company.
Anyone can use google and search this company out.
Dam near and I would not even flinch if it was all their products are rebadged other manufactures made products. And some not better than the factory pieces they mean to replace.
By now I think you all know where I stand with GMS, but I do ask you to search scams, ripoffs etc affiliated with this name GMS and see what you come up with I am no where near alone with this stance and you will even find other manufacturers at the ends of their ropes telling you WHO, WHAT, WHERE,WHEN and WHY GMS is like this!!

Just a simple taste.
I have never ever found a aftermarket company that has such negativity surrounding ever, not even close!! WHY???

Claims 70 years yet GMS was founded in like 1989.
Should have stayed with Law, we all know how well lawyers lie and really don't even care, its normal for them!!!
