How do turn-by-turn directions work?

I've never had a car with OnStar before. Without a full nav screen, how do you enter destinations?

You hit the OnStar button and ask for directions, and then they send you the turn by turn directions that pop up on your Driver Information Center (which is located between the speedometer and tachometer)

At least, that's my understanding of how it works

Here is exactly how it works:

You push the button on your mirror.
You get a tone and you say 'directions'
An operator comes on and asks where you'd like to go.
You say where'd you like to go.
You can give special directions at this point too, such as "I want to avoid downtown"
You wait a few seconds (you can be driving while you wait).
Then it displays arrows on your radio HID and the radio starts chiming in when you need to turn.

It's pretty easy.

you can also go to mapquest and map out up to 5 destinations to save directly to your car without having to talk to an advisor... at least that is how it is with my 2008 Acadia.

One thing to mention though it doesn't do a good job with road construction detours but what Nav system does? Ok I'm sure there are some but I dont drive in construction that much.
