Nothing about it sounds overly rare. Being an X55 small block car they are not nearly as much in demand as big block X22 and X66 cars.

Some reading will help try the link. Not all X11 car where SS, but if it is a SS then how complete and original is the car? It helps the value if it is a SS and documentation is key (Build Sheet)to find out how rare the car is and what it came with as far as opt. 36k or so Camaro's in 69 where SS and the SS 350 was the base motor for SS car's.

It is just a shell, I went and talked to the guy that bought it in 1973.He was telling me some of the things that it had, plus looking up the numbers on line. Just woundering if houndstooth and butter nut yellow was rare? On a 69 ss.

Butternut Yellow was code 40. Is that on the trim tag?

Look at the link GrnMchin gave. http://www.camaros.org

Houndstooth and butter nut yellow are not rare by themselves, but as far as how many 69 ss car came w/ that is hard to say. The houndstooth is readily available and easy to convert. The build sheet is key to bring back a car and have the proof. GM did not do a great job in the early days of tracking all the options and # of car produced w/ those option and is why the build sheet is key. As a shell it's only worth that (a shell)

^^This is what im starting to realize...Makes it tough to match the numbers on the Fisher production bodies. I was looking at a 69, that was made out of the Norwood plant, but its hard to actually know if its an SS or not. The X11 codes like stated above could still be a V8, but a 327. The base SS was a 350. Correct me if im wrong?

How does it work for the 68's then? On the Fisher stamps there are no "X" codes. How would you know if a 68 SS 396bb is true? VIN?

In 67/68 look at the engine code section of the protect o plate. Engine codes in 68 for 396 car's are as follows. All 396 cars if equiped from the factory where SS.
MQ 396/375 all
MT 396/375 w/alum head
MX 396/350 Man trans
MR 396/350 Auto trans
MW 396/325 Man trans
MY 396/325 Auto trans

x-11 code on the cowl tag alone does not make it an SS. That code was nothing more than a 'dressup' code which included the chrome trim along the rockers, around the wheel wells, the gills, around headlights and taillights and the roof drip edge. Be careful there are a lot of claimed SS350 cars out there with only the X11 code that were in fact just plain jane 327 or 307 cars. Check further; rest of the codes on the cowl and drivetrain codes.
On the cowl tag you will find the interior and exterior codes. If it were butternut yellow it woud have a 40 right before the PNT. It would also include a B or E for the vinyl top. This is on the seond line right side under BDY which is the partial VIN number. If it had houndstood, it would have either a 713 or 729 code in the TR (trim) area left side under ST69 124379. SS350's have the X55 code under the PNT section. Under the TRM section you will find the build date code. If it were built after the second week of December (12B) it would have that X55 code. Prior to that build date and it may not. If not you need to find the protect-o-plate or build sheet. The 350SS engine would have a HA code on the engine pad stamp if it were a 4 speed car.
As far as how rare it is that would be difficult to determine but you may be able to call Classic Industries and see if they can give a rough estimate on how many were built like that.

If it doesn't have the original motor, then it could be nearly impossible to tell if It's an SS without documentation. I say this because an X11 car could be a plain Camaro or an SS. Drop the gas tank and look above it to find the original build sheet. You might get lucky and it could be still there.

For 68, if there is no build sheet, no protect o plate and it does not have the numbers matching motor there is no definate way to tell if it is a true SS, the only thing you can really tell is if it was a V6 or V8 car without those. That being said when I purchase a first gen camaro I don't consider it an SS without one of those to prove it.

Case in point I have bought 2 68's the first one was a really beat up SS/RS, but had both the build sheet and the protect o plate. The second was a V8 car with indicators that it may be an SS such as the floor mounted auto shifter without a console and a few other little things, this car was in alot better condition than the SS/RS, but I paid less b/c there was no documentation.
