Weird Ticking for about 5 seconds after startup.....

Not sure what this ticking noise is but happens surely in the morning as soon as i start the car... it also seems to happen after the car has sat for a few hours..... Thought id check here first before bringing it to the dealership here.....

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2011 model year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 10-06-01-007A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Condition
Some customers may comment on an engine valve lifter tick noise that occurs after the engine has been shut off for at least two hours. The tick noise may last from two seconds to ten minutes.
Cause
This condition may be caused by any of the following:
Aerated oil in the valve lifter body, resulting in the valve lifter being unable to purge the air quickly.
A low engine oil level or incorrect oil viscosity.
Dirty or contaminated oil.
A low internal valve lifter oil reservoir level.
Debris in the valve lifter.
A high valve lifter leak down rate.
Correction
If the SI diagnostics do not isolate the cause of this valve lifter tick noise and normal oil pressure is noted during the concern, perform the following steps:
Inspect the engine oil condition and level. Refer to Owner Manual > Service and Appearance Care > Checking Things Under the Hood > Description and Operation > Engine Oil in SI. ?If the engine oil is more than one quart low, an incorrect oil viscosity is being used or if poor quality/contamination is observed, change the oil and filter.
Note: Allow at least a two hour soak time between engine OFF and start up when evaluating the tick noise.
Start the engine and evaluate the valve lifter tick noise. ?If the valve lifter tick noise is still present, replace all 16 valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement in SI.
Parts Information
Note: A V8 AFM engine requires 8 AFM lifters and 8 non-AFM lifters for a total of 16 lifters.
Part Number Description Qty
12576400 Non AFM Hydraulic Valve Lifter 8
12632143 AFM Hydraulic Valve Lifter 8

It take : 1 day for all test, it take 2 weeks to receive the lifters, 2 to 3 days to replace the lifters. ( 2 days if your dealership don't forget to order the gaskets !!). I lost my car during 4 days total with the test included. I don't know if it's an illusion but my car run better.

If it's the lifters, then only way to fix it is to replace them.

An exhaust leak can sound like this as well. Check around your exhaust gaskets for any indication.

My L99 sounded like it had this issue and since I started using Amsoil Extended Life the startup tick went away up till now and that was for the last 29000 miles. But I think the lifters still may need replacing. The only real fix is to have them replaced.

10w30 or 5w30, XL, OE or Premium

We also recommend zrod 10w30, designed specially for big engines

I think there is some level of valve tick that is acceptable after a cold startup and can be considered "normal". Mine will do this intermittently but it lasts for only 2-3 seconds.

I think some others have had the tick continue for minutes or even longer. Personally, I don't trust my dealership to crack open the engine and do this repair properly until something really breaks. I've read that some people still have a few second ticking noise AFTER the valve replacement.

So, I'd rather live with it and do nothing for now. I might try Amsoil for my next oil change just to see if it makes a difference.

and what would happen if it didn't get fixed? my 2004 GMC Sierra with the 5.3l just started making what I believe to be the ticking lifter noise.

My l99 did the same thing. Bring it to the dealer, this is not uncommon so the dealer should be fairly quick. I am a GM tech and my dealership stocked all the parts, I did my total job in a day. Its not a huge job and it fixed mine and the other dozens we do too. Warranty pays for it so no reason not to get it done. good luck

my engine has been fine for 17K miles. then, about two days ago, I heard a ticking noise as soon as I started the engine. it scared the crap out of me so I shut it off, restarted it and it was fine.

it hasn't happened again and I'm hoping it was a fluke. (wishful thinking I'm sure).

I'd like to think GM would replace the lifters in my L99 car. but I'm thinking they won't due to the S/Cer on my engine.

what do you guys think?

I have a 2011 L99 SS that has made a ticking noise since day one and it does not stop after you start it, it does it as long as it is runing. It is very noticeable so i took it back to the dealer about 2 days after I bought it and they said it was the high pressure fuel injectors. I waited another 3 months or so and took it to another dealership for a second opinion same result, they said it was the high pressure fuel injectors. My car has 1786 miles on it and it's not my daily driver, I have had it since Oct of 2011. This thread kind of has me worried that it's not the injectors. Any advice?

So just wondering...is this lifter issue due to AFM? Is it better if the lifters are working all the time, like with AFM turned off, or would that make matters worse? How many of you who've had AFM tuned out have had this lifter problem?

Mine does the same thing. I heard of a few reasons why it could do this, most recently I heard it was the fuel pump. Not sure but like most have stated its just a few seconds on certain mornings.
