2012 Annual Desert Run to Borrego Springs: HOG & CCSD - Sat, 03/14/2012 (10am - 2pm)

CORRECTION to TITLE: it is Saturday, March 24th, not the 14th...doh!

Calling all Harleys, Camaros, and Corvettes!!

Event: The plan is to drive/ride down to Borrego via Montezuma Rd and picnic in Christmas Circle. Fast cars at the front (for obvious reasons), motorcycles and slower cars at the back. Most of the Harleys will take the "East County Route", and most San Diego cars will take the "Central Route", meeting up at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel (at approximately 11 am, hang for <=15 minutes).

If those on the "Temecula Route" (IECC and others) do not want to back track from Dudley's, we can meet up where San Felipe Rd comes off 79 (at approximately 11:30 am), this is at the :50 minute mark from Temecula, about 5 miles before the final leg on Montezuma Valley Rd into Borrego Springs (by 12:15 pm)!

The timetable will firm up when we get closer to the Event Date (Saturday, March 24th)...I will get details on the eating venue, but it sounds like "BYOB", chairs and food.

Routes to Christmas Circle, Borrego Springs...
A. East County Route (1 hour 52 minutes)
B. Central Route (1 hour 49 minutes)
C. Temecula Route (1 hour 34 minutes)

I'll put the word out to the Corvette owners. We used to do an annual run to Borrego in April, so I would think this would be popular.

Some of us leave for Spring Mountain/Vegas the following weekend and the St. Pat's parade is the weekend before. So the 24th should be good timing!

Updated info

Just wanted to make note that CCSD, COCSD, and Camaro5 members going on this cruise - just 3 1/2 weeks away - are guests of the El Cajon HOG Chapter (ECHOG) and it is their ride / route from Dudley’s (although we will put the fast cars at the front once the groups meet for safety reasons).

I updated the official starting point for the East County Route (see Post #1) to match the planned ECHOG route. Their schedule is to meet at the El Cajon Harley Davidson Dealership starting at 09:30 am, have a Rider's Brief at 09:45 am, then hit the road to Dudley's Bakery by 10:00 am to meet up with the rest of those going on the Desert cruise. They only expect to "...see a couple of nice Camaro's with us.", so let's show them a dozen or more Camaros and Corvettes!

This will be a "saddle bag picnic" (Harley lingo for a "sack lunch" for those unfamilar with the term... ), so bring your favorite picnic lunch and chairs.

MARCH 24TH... YOUR'E CORRECT!

As it sets now I believe there are 30+ Harleys ( they'll be in the back), 9 + Camaros and a good size group from the SD Corvette Club. It should be a great drive!

Ken, thanks for the correction (the original tentative date was the 10th, and when it locked in on the 24th, I made a boo-boo...)

Rob, I hope you can make it...

Mike,

I completely forgot i saw this even last week or so. Trying to put together a bon voyage meet/cruise for Cmlloveless on the same day. If the group would rather, we might tag along. I'll keep you posted.

I would love to try this again - and hopefully not hit that guard rail this time. Unfortuantely, I will be in Hawaii instead.

Aaron, It would be sweet if you, Cmlloveless, and others would opt for the inland cruise on the 24th, but if the coastal cruise wins out (and I know the perks...), I will understand!

03/20/2012 UPDATE: The Desert Cruise to Borrego Springs is just 4 days away from today folks...glad we did not pick last weekend!

The weather forecast is looking GREAT for this Saturday...mid 60s in the Mountains, low 70s in the Desert. Remember to bring a sack lunch on this cruise!

Slight change to the cruise destination... (impact = 2-3 extra cruising minutes!!)
There was an art show scheduled for last weekend and due to the rain, they are moving it to this weekend. This means that Christmas Circle will already be taken as they set up in the Circle. The plan is to take the group to the Visitor Center instead. There is plenty of places people can find to sit and eat (including the amphitheater). Then anyone who wants to go down to Christmas Circle to see the art show can also plan on doing that.

Be at a starting point by 10:00 am, since the plan is to meet at Dudley's in Santa Ysabel by 11:00 am! If anyone is taking the Temecula Route, chime in so we know to meet up where San Felipe Rd comes off 79 (at approximately 11:30 am).

Routes to Visitor Center, Borrego Springs...
A. East County Route (1 hour 54 minutes)
B. Central Route (1 hour 51 minutes)
C. Temecula Route (1 hour 37 minutes)

Friday, 03/23/2012 UPDATE

The weather is holding for us tomorrow! Looks like it will be in the low 60s at the cruise's 10:00 AM start, could dip to the mid to high 50s at the 11:00 am rendevous point at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel (all the more reason to dip inside and buy some warm goodies?), but should be in the high 60s to 70 degrees upon our arrival in Borrego Springs around noon time! There is only a 10% chance of any precipitation on Saturday according to The Weather Channel's website forecast.

So, to recap: bring a sack / igloo lunch, folding chairs, and at least a wind breaker for any potential chilly "meet & greet" at the start and rendevous points!

I don't know how many Corvettes will be there, but my best guess is 6-7. We're meeting at Bob Stall Chev. at 9:30. See you at Dudley's!

Dudley's it is...will your group be stopping at the EC Harley shop for the 10:00 am departure from there with the HOGs (and at least one 5th Gen...John with his Silver Ice Metallic ride)?

Did you see this morning's KUSI weather forecast? Borrego Springs' high is now forecast to be 81 degrees today! Still looks to be chilly (mid 50s) at Dudley's, but what the heck, there should be plenty of piping hot manifolds to warm up to...

Hey Mike (and the others from CCSD and HOGs), sorry we didn't stick around for lunch with the group. The better halves just weren't comfortable with the heat and dust at the visitor center. We went over to the circle instead. Even though the art festival was going on, there was plenty of room for everyone on the grass. If I would have had your phone no., I would have called.

Thanks for the invitation. The cruise was fun. It would have been nice if we had more participation from our club members, but those of us who did attend had a good time.

Our club calendar is on our website at www.cocsd.com. You and your fellow CCSDers are always welcome to join us at any of our events. How about a Camaro vs. Corvette challenge at K1 Speed?

Craig, thanks for your Club's participation! Sorry about the dust and dirt, when I google mapped "Borrego, Visitor Center", the one at the Chamber of Commerce 2 blocks (if you can call those blocks...didn't notice too many curbs!) away from Christmas Circle came up, so I mistakenly identified that as the updated end point...I will do better homework next time!

Maybe you can talk Ken and "Mr. Hennessey" into a Camaro vs. Corvette challenge? I will buy a ticket to watch that! Thanks for your invite to your Club Calendar events, I will check it out and solicit CCSD members.

BTW, CCSD has been invited to tour the Hennessey Shop in / near Lake Forest / Irvine, with a possible coastal cruise beforehand one Saturday morning (in June?)...I bet I could get others in if they either a) join CCSD, or b) enter their ride in CCSD's Annual Fall Classic on Coronado this September! I will keep everyone posted!
