Moving back to Orange County. Inspection Questions.

So as you can in my sig, I have long tubes and high flows on my car. When I lived there about 3 years ago, all I heard about from people with mods done to their cars, was emissions testing. So I need to know. Am I going to have to take them off?

Thanks

Not immediately. Ca law allows six model years before a vehicle must be tested for SMOG. Looks like you have a 2011, so you're good until the 2017 registration year. But, as was 3 years ago when you lived here, long tubes will not pass SMOG. Doug Thorley's says their 50 state SMOG legal, but

I would leave them on for testing...might be too loud without them!! lol j/k

There's a ca laws sticky somewhere...IMO with a new car, you'll be ok for a few years...doubt they'll make you test at all..

If you are registering your out of state car in CA you will have to smog it.

Check the corvette forums for tips on how to pass.

You're probably right, but just for bs sake, I thought a lot of states were copying ca emissions on new cars, and may not need a test if re-registered...

So what exactly is my answer here? Am I going to have to register it, right when I move there or no?

You'll have to register it within six months, unless you're military/federal worker non-resident. To register it, you'll need a SMOG. Check this thread about CA Laws.

When you buy a new car it's 5 years from the date of purchase. But I think when you move to another state you have to smog it. I think now it's a visual smog and they don't actually have the sniffer that used to go up the tail pipe.

We bought our cars in california so they are good for six or seven years on smog. You said you lived in orange county three years ago, so you probably know as much about it as we do.

It's 5 years unless they changed it this year.

Actually, I goofed...you only get 20 days to register once you establish residence in CA. But, I'm sure you could fake it for six months.

You'll have 20 days to register the vehicle, but before you can register, you'll need to pass smog, that's the law. now, i know plenty of people who "waited" until their out of state registration expired, then they "brought" their cars in to California and registered within the allowed 20 days , Also while you're here, and "moving" between both states, you can also get in touch with people that can help you out with the mods you have. ask people to PM you some local shops that might help you go back to "California Stock" for smog purposes. Since this shops might be busy with all the work, you don't need to post any names, PM is the best approach

Have Fun.

Passing the visual is only one part, if you have a custom tune or any emission parameter altered from factory settings, during the smog inspection your cars ECM will be plugged into and will flash these as errors and you will not pass. I'm not sure with LT and hi flow cats with factory SW model in the ECM will pass (probably will not pass the visual anyway) but mostly likely you are already encountering CELs and will fail.
