about warranty and tune

when u do a tune , the car has a flash counter , right does it also record the date it was flashed , i was just wondering as i bought a used camaro with alot of warranty left on it , and i know they didnt have time to check if the car was tunned.

I doubt a date would matter... once it's tuned, that's the end of it. I could be wrong though...

I think he's worried about what the previous owner might have done to void the warranty...

GM knows. If it's been done by the previous owner, the warranty was already gone.

Didn't have time? that sounds fishy to me. It doesn't take but a min or 2 to check.

They aren't going to check to see if the flash counter is correct or not, unless you stipulated that in the purchase agreement. Even some of the service writers and mechanics don't know about this yet.

You bring up an interersting question though.

i just bought a used camaro last week and i still get the remainder of the warranty but i asked if i tune the car does it void the warranty and they said it does and if the previous owner tuned the car they could not offer me the remainder of the warranty

im sure if they couldnt give you the remainder of the warranty they would tell you... was your car GM certified? if it was that would be the only reason they would find out if it was tuned or not

what im sayin i know they couldnt have checked cause the car was only on the lot for maybe 20 hours the car had the regular warranty on it and i purchaused the extended warranty , i then bought a exhaust and cai and noticed the car had this had a cai on it before cause the bolts were loose and u could just tell , no biggie what im sayin is i know 100% they never checked to see if the car was tuned or anything , if i was to tune the car now and something go wrong i could make the argument of sayin it must have been tuned before i got it which it may have been not sure cause it did have boltons on it at one time and factory put back on it. i just want to know if they can tell what day it was flashed get what im sayin .

car was used and traded in on a zr1.
they didnt even have time to clean it up or anything.

Exactly what everyone should check and get in writing before purchasing a used Camaro. I seriously doubt they ever get checked on the used lot.

I know my first trade-in WAS tuned and returned to stock. It was on the lot for a while and then went to auction so who knows where it ended up. The car was mint, but eventually someone could have problems if they checked the flash counter...

Lets just clarify, the tune will void the power train warranty however, if you electric window stops working or you have a bumper to bumper issue the car would still be covered.

The flash counter has dates on it. That's how GM knows. If they see any flashes on there that don't match up with your warranty work then your powertrain warranty is gone.

Doesn't matter if the previous owner tuned it and the dealership never checked. If you tune your car your powertrain warranty is gone. You can complain all you want, but that is what it says in the warranty manual.

This does make for interesting point for the savvy used Camaro buyer that wants to negotiate............... Otherwise move on to a different seller that knows what they are actually selling.

Ultimately, this is a buyer beware situation but a very intersting point.

This is why I can't bring myself to install LT headers, Cam, etc. I can only imagine what an engine or any of the power train would cost me. Oh, and BTW, I bought an extended warranty for 7 years....that too!!?? Oh well, she runs pretty well just the way she is....

The best thing to do is have the service guys read the ECM now and send that # to GM so it is on record as the data when you bought it.

I answered you a few posts up. Yes, the flash counter keeps track of the date it was flashed.

so here's a question, if someone wanted to tune their car but didnt want to lose the powertrain waranty could you buy a new ECM to swap out and tune to and if you ever had an issue put the original ECM back in for waranty work?

Nope.

Been covered quite extensively on here before on how it isn't possible to get away with it.

In short, there are numerous tables and information stored on the ECM that is also stored in other modules in the car. If you swap the ECM and drive with another one the information no longer matches and tells GM that you swapped them. Not to mention, every time you swap the ECM you have to turn it on after you install it which only a dealer can do.

This.

Look, it's really simple: If you tune your car, you lose your powertrain warranty. End of discussion. There is NO way to cheat the system.

Doesnt the dealer have to prove the tune affected the failure of something in the engine though? Based on the aftermarket parts act?

really so a swapped ECM won't work and can only be setup by the dealer?

that is false

the issue is getting a ECU, as GM has put the vendors on lockdown, the days of buying from ECMoutlet.com and others are over... but if you get one out of a wreck, or stumple upon one, Hptuners can match it to your VIN and you can tune that ECM... and you can swap it for your stock ECM and you can put your stocker on a shelf and Gm CAN'T detect an ECM swap, mileage is NOT stored in the ECM, its the BCM... and does swapping ECM work? yes
