My 850 dollar Budget gaming computer... Thoughts?

I know I'm missing things like cables and whatnot, but I have those pieces.

case, mouse, keyboard, cd-rom, wireless NIC, etc.

I haven't kept up on what's hot these days but I want to be able to run World of Warcraft again, and not with 0.4 fps. Can I get suggestions before I break down and buy these to assemble? My current computer was built by yours truly in Feb of '01.

I'd love to help you out...but I don't really know the first thing about RAM, ROM, intel, NVIDIA, etc on computers. All I know is that our new HP Pavillion is the sh!t. I've never used a computer as fast as this one. Every time I click on the mouse and bring my hand back to the keyboard, the page has loaded and is ready for me to type. This thing loads like you wouldn't believe....programs start up in no time at all. Our deal was $1,000 and is a bit more than your budget, but the main reason we got this computer??? My wife wants to be able to play games that don't lock up on her cause the computers slow.

That and the old computer is just that...old. Memory full, etc, etc, etc. This is a great comp for games. If you're interested, I can get the model # and everything else for you. We bought it at Sams club. Worth looking into.

Please do. I'd like to compare it with this set up. Probably came with a moniter and mouse and keyboard/etc. HP hasn't had the deals that I'm looking for. Neither has Dell or Gateway.

I'll post up all the goodies tomorrow....specs and all. Lights are off and the wife is sleeping next to me. Don't want to wake her and piss her off...hehe.

Our package deal came w/ the 22 inch widescreen LCD monitor, PCU, and wireless keyboard/mouse. Speakers are built into the monitor. Think we'll end up buying the 2.1 Klipsch pro media speakers for it, though. I'll have all the info in the am. Seriously, this computer is the best I'v eva been on. Hitting the sack...letcha know in teh am.

if you can upgrade to 4GB of Ram...it might pay off in the long run, because new computers are starting to come standard with 4 in them. BUT 2 is definitely nothing to respectable.

but other than that, I'd say Wow. Nice setup. The Core Duo processer is impressive, if you haven't used one before (since they're relatively new), you're gonna fall in love. especially with 2.66GH, I've got 2 in my notebook, and it's quick as hell.

I know you won't have any trouble, so have fun!

Just one question, what are you upgrading from? I'd like to know how far of a jump your taking from your old computer.

One place to like to save a little $ is the hard drive. With external hard drives so cheap (just saw a 500GB for $119) I try to keep the hard drive a little lower. Also makes transferring files between computers when you get a new one easier.

I like that you have the AMD Athlon. My last computer had the Athlon, and my current laptop also has the Athlon 64. I've always read good things concerning the Athlon vs. the Pentium.

My problem is I can't find a laptop with a 17" or larger monitor with the Athlon anymore. HP (my preferred brand for my next laptop) doesn't have it anyway. From a little digging it seems the AMD Turion is equal to the Athlon, only designed for laptops. Anyone else know if that's true? When I purchased my current laptop 2+ years ago there was no Turion, only the Athlon and Sempron.

I built a laptop on HP's website to my specifications (same as I did with my current one when I bought it) and it came to just over $1500 for everything I'd want. Not too bad really considering my current laptop was just over $1200 when I got it. $300 more for an even better laptop is understandable.

But I'm hoping not to have to get another laptop for at least another year or so. This one is still working fine for now.

I got a notebook this past November...whoa! It's already been a year?!?...damn.
Anyways, got it a year ago for roughly 1200, but after the case, and the printer, and the speakers, etc. It came to just under 1500 all taxes included.

Gateway MP8708 Best Buy model

160 GB hard drive
2GB Ram
667Mb front side bus <= this was new at the time
Pentium Core Duo 2 2.00Ghz
17 in LCD widescreen.
DVD R/RW, CD R/RW
4 USB slots,
Windows Vista Home Premium.
128Mb Graphics Card

I wanted Lightscribe. But this one didn't have it, even as an option...

We have lightscribe on this computer. Only problem...you have to buy different types of DVD's and CD's in order to use the lightscribe...and they are much more expensive than a 50 pack of regular CDR's/DVDr's...

And, this came w/ a DVD burner as well. I have an open expansion slot for whatever and an HP pocket media drive bay. More stuff to buy...

let me drag this really quick.

ok my old computer is as follows:

P4 1.8 GHz
512 RAMBus
GeForce 4 Ti4600 128 MB card
Sound Blaster Audigy
80 GB SATA 7,200 RPM HDD
CD drive (Didn't need DVD cuz I had a PS2)

I don't need the best, but I'm gonna start playing WoW again. With the ram, I can easily just buy another 2 gigs later on. 92 dollars for 2 gigs of 800MHz RAM is insane.

Mine has the Lightscribe also, but as you said the DVD/CD's cost more. I can use a marker for less $. LOL

Here's a question. How does the RPM's of the hard drive affect performance?

The higher the RPM, the faster the data can be read from the platters, which increases overall performance.

I thought it was something along those lines. Thanks.

I tend to opt for the faster RPM's with lower hard drive GB over the higher GB/lower RPM. Good to know I was doing the right thing.

Unless you're a really impatient person, though, I've never really felt a difference where going back to an average-speed HDD became agravating, or anything...

Nice setup! You ready for a speed-shock with your new one?

$92, damn straight! That's awesome. I remember when 2GB first came out, they wanted, like 3k to upgrade your computer to 2Gb  I can imagine separate parts were similar in price at the time, too.

When I bought this laptop they upgraded me to 512 megs of RAM for free, and that was great at the time. Oh you have to love how fast technology improves and becomes more affordable.
