My "This Is Not a Street Race" Story

So I'm driving next to a Chrysler Sebring convertible when we pull up next to him at a light. For some reason the girl I'm with rolls down the window. I was mad because I like hiding behind the tint and letting the car get the attention and its really strange to pull up to a car at a light and at the same time roll the window down. So the light turns green and I start to drive normally. All of the sudden the Sebring guns it. The funny thing is that he really didn't go anywhere. We listened as his poor little engine gave it everything she had but it just wasn't doing anything. I couldn't stop laughing and thinking how lucky I am to have this car. I never went past 3 thousand rpms and this guy was giving it all he had. It's my first taste of what driving around during spring break is going to bring.

People are so funny when they see these cars. I get so many people who drive a little faster when they see me or SUVs that take off obviously thinking "I'm faster than that camaro"...people are really strange. I always wondered why people who drive the SS are usually going so slow. Now I realize its because we have nothing to prove. I know my car is badass and Im not worried about proving it to every car on the road.

So I guess my question is: do you guys think my 2012 SS will beat a mid 90s Chrysler Sebring vert???

You do realize not everyone that takes off from a line quick, is trying to race you or show off, right? Over dramatic.

yep... I have had people honk at me at a light so I roll down the window and they say "damn, that was a close race, better luck next time". thats when I realize they just raced me and I had no idea...... guess they assumed I raced too and they beat me in their sentra/etc....

Several years ago I pulled up next to a Ferrari. I forget which model it was but it was one of the newer ones of the mid 90s. I revved a bit, and he revved back. I dropped the clutch on my 300 HP 3000GT and watched him just blow me out of the water. I had a friend in the car who asked me, "Why would you be dumb enough to race a ferrari? " and I responded, "When is the last time you saw a ferrari gun it off the line?"

in short, I knew I couldnt beat it, but damn was it awesome to see it go. I was living in fantasy land for just that long.

Most the people messing with you like this dont think they can win, they just want to fantasize about the car you have, so take it as flattery!

I don't really notice this, nor did I with my last car. When people are around, I don't drive my car in a way that attracts attention. Only 5mph over the speed limit (7 on a few selected roads) on roads, 3mph over on highways, except for the bigger ones where I do 5, usually not fast accelerations (but sometimes I do have a bit of fun) and so forth. I do take the turns a little faster, but it's hard to notice due to how stable the car is. I don't get people "challenging me" because they're usually already passing me and don't take me for someoen who is going to try "0-60" at a stoplight. I've already had enough tickets (but thankfully it's been years and my record is clean) to know where to do stuff and where not to do it. Some people get off on having other people see them do stuff and being measured by what others do or can't do. I don't really care and have fun with my car on mountain roads and other less-traveled venues. I have to say that I don't really have issues with teenagers and 20-year-olds trying to "challenge" me, even though my car looks "all business". Racing should mostly be kept to tracks and closed courses, and this thread is all about racing. Agressive and fun driving doesn't have to be, but as soon as it's compared against anyone else, it is racing. Most people I see doing this kind of stuff invite it. Not to say everyone though, but for me it's pretty rare to get any of this. Plus, go drive in Scottsdale or something, no one will care there that you drive a tricked out Camaro SS.

The thing is, in cities, stoplights, anything where you are limited and can't just keep going to insane speeds, a turbo AWD car will always own off the line and make you look like an ass as you pass at 60 while he's hitting the brakes(where he can't sustain any advantage anymore).

I think my point was well received. He wasn't really thinking he could win, I completely believe he was trying to get me to show off. I was just commenting on how it happens all the time and I have realized the more I have the less I want to flaunt it. Almost everytime I drive this car someone reminds me of how lucky I am to own it and the responsibility it caries. I'm pretty tired as today was the first day of spring break. I rent chairs and umbrellas and I sell parasail rides. The video is from the last chair on my line today around 2pm

How do u think i feel. I take mine to school and just about every cool kid with some kind of sports car trys to race me on the way home. Every once and awile ill catch on at a red light and show then the true power of the camaros but ill only go to 55 and then let off as they then pass me going about 70.

Kids will always be kids...

People are idiots. I have had several SUVs and trucks race me. And by race me, I mean fly by me at 80-90MPH on the interstate, while I'm cruising at night. No cars have tried to race me yet, and if they do, I won't race them. I don't need to beat a civic to prove my car has power. I'll save if for the dragstrip.

Years ago in one of my ex-GMC Typhoons I owned, I pulled up next to a Lambo VT Roadster at a light. Eye contact was made, we both grinned and knew exactly what was about to go down. At the time I was an avid street racer, so I wasnt going to back down at the opportunity. About the only thing we had in common was AWD.

My at the time girlfriend (now wife) looked at me, "Youre kidding right? Isnt that a Lamborghini....?"

"Yep..."

Light turned green and we both came out of the hole hard and I got out of it which was not like me and let the Lambo go....

"Why did you even do that...you knew you werent going to win..."

"I know I had no chance...but did you hear that thing sing? It was beautiful, and thats all I wanted was to see that thing take off and hear it...."

By that time, the guy in the Lambo had done a u-turn and was passing back by me with a thumbs up. He needed an excuse to open that car up and I was happy to be the excuse.

I hadn't even got my car home from the dealership before people wanted to race it. I was pretty excited with my purchase and posted some pics on a well known performance shop web site and so many comments from Mustang and Charger owners "my car would beat that any day" etc, etc. I really don't care i'd prefer to keep my license, my car and my life intact

I cannot agree more with you on that. About a week ago when I got my Camaro and was driving home from dealership with my Brother and Dad. People started zooming by me and at one point there is this guy in Regal 2.0 Turbo that passes by me, gets in front of me hoping I will floor it and pass him and then when I did not do that he starts checking out my car by actually trying to stand up a bit in his seat just and watching in his rear view just to catch a glimpse of my baby cruising on its way to home.

It was hilarious...

I would imagine alot of poeple think they beat me in a race when I didnt know I was in a race to begin with. If any of you have a stalled auto you will know exactly what I mean. Taking off the car needs some RPM to get moving. Add in LT headers and a cam and everyone thinks your racing from a stop light. I cant tell you how many cars have flown by me because they thought they were in a race. I'm talking soccer moms to 16 yr olds. I always shake my head and think that person has no clue what my car could have done and how loud it would have been at WOT.

"I dont even think I need to speed"

It's definitely interesting how other drivers treat you when in various vehicles. I notice the only vehicle people get outta my way immediately is in a bright red F-150 4x4. It was my rental for this passed month and was nice to have people move out the way lol.

People don't have a clue. If they even heard your car at WOT they'd crap their pants.
Once you get more seriously modded (with full exhaust - long tubes) Going wide open from a green light is completely out of the question because it brings so much attention (tire screeching and exhaust screaming).

I could see a stock V6 getting away with a nice WOT run off the line. But a modded SS can be heard for miles.
