Very torn...

I purchased a Honda Accord coupe EX-L last summer, before knowing anything about cars. After viewing the camaro and reading about it/ falling in love with it, I began to think about selling my car and getting the 2LT/RS. If it was summer and I knew what I know now about cars, I would have waited until this car came out. Although I like the accord, the camaro seems more to my liking. Keep in mind, I am 20 and the accord's I-4 190 (more like 160) hp falls VERY flat. When put next to each other, the camaro 2LT/RS gives much more than the accord EX-L (V6, fog lights, tiptronic option, 20" rims, spoiler, all that good stuff), and the pricing comes very close. Im not saying that my car right now is crap...it's a great reliable car, looks sexy, and good on gas. But I dont have to describe the attraction to this camaro. My question is, is it worth going through the resale process? This is also my first car, so it's not like im experienced with selling cars. Also, if my car depreciated drastically then I probably wouldn't have the option of getting rid of my car (college student = not a lot of $ to spend lol). Please give some insight!

You should stick with the Accord. It's reliability is probably better and it is certainly more practical, as it is front wheel drive. The Camaro's rear-wheel drive train is not something most people are used to and only makes it ideal in dry, warm weather. You'd probably be losing a lot of money on trade-in or even privately selling the Accord. My advice: Don't bother.

I almost did the same thing....Was about to pull the trigger as I thought the 2010 did not arrive till next year.

Forget the "wheel drive" ...do what your heart says. You can make it a keeper and that will NEVER happen with the Honda.

I just traded in my 08 Accord EX-L sedan (I4, A5 w/Navi) and got $20,500

I took a beating but I didn't like the Accord. It had no soul. It reminded me of a refrigerator. They work great for years but don't instill any passion.

Having said that, keep the Accord only because of the financial hit you'll be taking. Maybe in 12 to 18 months, but not now. You'll take all the depreciation.

There is a GOD!

I put a C note on a 2009 Blue Accord EX-L coupe with Navi at the end of November 2008. The dealer kept telling me that my order was kicked out, not making that color (ploy to get me to buy one off the lot), :( finally in March after my order was kicked out for the 5th time I said "SHOW ME THE MONEY!". I fell in love with the camaro and took a road trip all the way to NY to sit in one . Needless to say I went home and ordered my Aqua Blue Baby 2SS. Thank you Lord for kicking that order out!

From a economic standpoint i would say stick with what you got. But for your own satisfaction and happiness i would say ditch it for the camaro because thats what you REALLY want. It all comes down to how much money means to you. Everyone pays to be happy, but how happy do you want to be or are going to be? If having the extra money makes you less happy because you don't have the camaro get the camaro. If you dont have extra money to play with happiness stay with what you got and be content, and be happy that you are making a wise economic choice. either way its a win win if you figure out a way to bend it right with perspective.

I was actually in the market for a 3.5L Altima Coupe and was very close to buying one. These cars have a great features and the interior is awesome but when I found out how much it would cost with options and everything else I told myself for this much, I can get a 1SS for double the power and the fun. Plus the Camaro is a better looking car. I walked away from the deal and soon pre-ordered a 2ss...

After only owning a car for a year, unless you put down a BIG chunk of change, you will more than likely have thousands of dollars in negative equity. Since you said you're in college and don't have a lot of $, I'd probably just stay with you Accord through at least half of your loan. By that time you should have some equity, seeing as it's a Honda and all the yuppie's LOVE used Honda's. By that time, the 2011 should be out and you may even be able to afford a 2SS, or maybe a 2LT Convertible (wishful thinking, I know).

I recommend you do some financial analysis. Find out what someone like CarMax will give you for your Accord. Won't hurt to know. Then you can make an informed decision about the trade up. Ask yourself: Is it worth $7K? 10K? to trade up?

I would not recommend trading in the Accord at a Chevy dealer. This is a notorious way for dealers to rip off unsuspecting customers.

Everyone is looking at the obvious, but you will want to do a lot of reasearch. Not just auto trader, but for insurance as well. If you are saying the accord is your first car, the insurance companies are going to eat you up with a Camaro.

An SS will be a pretty big monthly payment if you are 20. The V6 will be better for you all around, but the insurance on a 300hp car is not cheap either for a 20yr old. Have you checked to see how much the insurance will go up from the Accord to the Camaro? Worth checking ahead of time. Some on here at 23 are quoting 350 a month for the V6.

Smart thing would be to keep the Honda until you are no longer upside down. If I were you I'd probably try and find a way to swing the Camaro. But don't listen to me, I have an illness. LOL

I have an '08 Accord V6 coupe that I will be selling outright when I order my SS. There is nothing wrong with the Accord. I simply have no passion for this car. I sold an '06 GTO before I bought the car (big mistake). Once you've owned a muscle car, you're not really satisfied with anything else.

Before you trade, you really need to look at how much money you will lose as well as how much it will cost to insure the car. I'm an old fart, so for me insurance on a 2SS is going to run me $355 every six months.

I have two kids in college. My advice is to drive what you have and do the very best you can in college. When you graduate and have a job, you'll be in a better position to trade and buy what you want.

Good luck with your decision.

I was all ready to say "Buy the Camaro you fool!" until you said you're still in college. That changes everything, for 2 big reasons. 1, you never know how long the gap will be between when you graduate and when you land the job you've spent 4 or 5 years getting educated for, and you really don't want any monthly payments or high insurance eating away at your meager savings then. 2, a college is a massive gathering place of people who do stupid stuff just to see what happens, and you don't want them within 100 yards of your car. Trust me, my Grand Am still bears the marks of people who wanted to watch a trash can bounce down their front stairs into the street.

i am 21 years old, getting a 2ss, and state farm told me i will be at about $150 a month for full coverage on it. But i also have 2 other vehicles insured through them, so i get a multi-car discount. Insurance isnt too terrible on them

My rate for the 2ss is 43 a month.

Look at where you live. You are in South Dakota, correct? He is in Brooklyn NY. It might be a big difference in what he pays compared to you.

For your age, 150 a month is pretty good.

yeah i guess your right, i never thought about the location. I was pretty suprised at how low 150 was actually, my 04 silverado is about 700 every 6 months, and the camaro is only 100 more. I have a pretty good driving record too tho. No accidents, and a few speeding tickets. Dont get a ticket if you outrun the cops, and outsmart the radios!

i'm doing the same thing. i drive a lexus IS and i'm looking to get a new car (giving the lexus to my wife). i'm a young guy too, 26, but i already have my profession so it's easier for me to car shop for the perfect car. i was thinking of what is the smart decision here...get a reliable car (lexus, infiniti, bmw, etc) or get a fun car (camaro)?

my boss told me:

"you're young. you have plenty of time to be mature and make the RIGHT decisions...get the f----n muscle car!"

so i think you should follow your heart. but, you have a lot to consider. if i were you, i'd check the kelley blue book value of your car. in this market, you're going to have to be competitive with your asking price, so you might have to sell it a bit cheaper than what most people are asking for. depending on how much you owe on your honda, you might or might not have enough for a good down payment on a new camaro. that might answer your question right there.

you also need to compare what your monthly payments will be and compare them to what you're paying now. if it's about the same, then go for it. also look at insurance prices. the camaro will be a lot more than the honda!! can you afford the new monthly figures? if so, then do it.

and for all of you that pay so little in insurance, i hate you and your states!! california rapes us on these prices!! i have a perfect driving record, and i'll probably have to pay 250 a month for the 2ss camaro!!
