Question Powder coating help....

I am wanting to get some powdercoating done on my wheels, however I have 2 wheels with curb rash. Never let a women drive a mans car. Anyways I am going to try and repair it myself using this technique..

http://club4g.org/board/wheels-tires...-pictures.html

(hopefully the link doesnt get removed, if it does its basically showing how you can fix curf rash using bondo and sandpaper)

My question is I know that powder coat only "sticks to metal" so will I have any issues or imperfections of the repaired part of the rim while it is being powdercoated?

Thanks

You have to use a metal filler like Lab Metal. Bondo will not work at all; do not use it.

Doubtful, best bet is online.

It is harder than bondo but not impossible to do by hand, it'll just take longer. Apply sparingly. Hi temp is best if you are doing multiple coats of powder, the regular stuff will handle a single heating. I'd suggest speaking with your coater to make sure he's ok with the repairs you're doing and method you're using.

Have you ever personally used it? Im going to research it online to get some tip on how to apply and work with it.

Dont want to pay $150+ for some wheel repair guy to come and do the same thing I can.

Yes I did powdercoating for a few years. Surface prep is critical. Wire brush the area and then use some paint prep/degreaser to make sure its perfectly clean. Much like paint you want it scuffed/rough for adhesion. Then apply, let it dry and sand. It can be worked similar to JB Weld if you ever used that although its slightly more liquid and doesn't require a hardener. If you have a thick repair greater than 1/8" you should do a couple coats. A really thick single application won't cure very well and will offgas/shrink when heated in the oven. If air can't get to it it can't cure. Give it a day inbetween coats, don't rush it or your powder will look like crap and as the coater I wouldn't warranty it because you did the work. For tough jobs you lightly heat the part after each coat to aid in curing and ensure no shrinking during coating.

Air will have it cure so once you open the can it won't last long in storage unless you follow their guidelines on applying a layer of solvent on top.
