L99 Exhaust Upgrade

Been thinking about doing it, but there are many here who have done it and regret it due to the AFM noise.
Is it really that bad?

^^ Until you have a drive line problem ^^.
Don't loose your warranty- Get the Solo J-pipe axle backs.
I have absolutely no drone or AFM noise on My L99 SS with these,
plus a great deep aggressive sound.

Nonsense. I have a 3" magnaflow competition catback and no tune. AFM is not that big of a deal. When it kicks on all it does is change tone a bit. Also i get zero drone. It just simply sounds way way better now.

I have the Borla S and I've not once noticed the AFM drone that a lot of people complain about. My hearing is better then most people I know so these people must have better hearing then mine.

Now if you want to hear a car drone, let me give you a ride in my '97 Z28. Now that car drones something bad. One ride in that car and you'll never complain about the AFM drone again.

I'm interested in this info also. I'm thinking of buying one for my '12 SS. I have heard good things about the Solo, but the Borla name just stands out there. Subscribing to this thread!

I had my SS L99 at a car show last summer parked next to another new SS with the Borla exhaust.
My Solos sounded so much deeper and more aggressive IMO. Of course I might have been a little biased.

There really isn't AFM drone with the Solo system, but there is AFM noise. It's there when stock too, if you know what to listen for. To me, it sounded like my car was farting every time it kicked in and out. I paid for a V8 and that's what I want, not a 4-banger 75% of the time. The best solution is a tune. Yes it's a risk losing your warranty, but this is supposed to be a fun car, not an econo-box. Come on, GM

But what's the advantage of the x-pipe? The Solo doesn't have one, correct?

Solo cat-back has an x-pipe, axle-back just replaces the mufflers with straight pipes.

Unless your REALLY worried about loosing your warrantee I would say get a good tune no matter what exhaust you go with. These cars are tuned pretty rich and with a good tune, you can turn off the AFM system, get an improvement in power and trans performance and maintain the same or better fuel milage as factory original, plus there is no issue with the AFM system after that.

You may want to drive your car for several thousand miles just to make sure there are no bugs hiding in the car. From what I have seen, general warrantee bugs will show up within the first 3-4K miles anyway, after that, if everything is working well it generally stays working well for the most part. That obviously depends on how you drive the car.

JMO!!!

I had a Borla Touring with AFM and it would vibrate my dash at 70-73 mph the harmonic drone was so bad.... "Fart Can" is a good description for when AFM would kick in... Depends on your driving conditions. I would take a 4 hour drive every couple weeks to our cottage so I was cruise control at 73 mph.... thank god for paddle shift in 6th cause AFM would stay off the whole trip. Solo sounds like it is a pretty good setup if keeping AFM.... let us know what you end up doing and how it sounds to you.

So whats the deal about AFM? Does it make some kind of exhaust noise when transitioning in and out of AFM?

Yep. The stock exhaust masks it pretty well, but once you go aftermarket, it will sound crappy to varying degrees depending on the brand. I'm not sure if I could hear it when it switched to 4 cylinders, but when it would go back into V8 mode, I'd hear a brief gurgle/cough/fart sound, sort of like the engine was clearing its throat. It wouldn't be so bad if AFM only kicked in at freeway speeds or something, but it turned on when cruising at any speed.

i dont like to miss my sound with headers and cat-back. don't want to have the stock sound again...you will like it, and if AFM disturbs you, get a tune and its away. or always use the paddles to get AFM away.

It wasn't that bad on mine unless you drove in full auto and lugged it around Sunday driving. It's just annoying to have that power delay. That was my main reason for switching. The J pipes are the easiest way of dealing with most drone, but the looks of them turn me off. Some of the 350z crowd use a similar canister-style deal hanging off the rear pipes, and they still look so out of place.
Granted, on the Camaro they aren't too visible, but I still couldn't do it.
The tune is so worth it for so many other reasons too.
