gears gears GEARS!

Thinking of doing 3.73s on my L99. I haven't been to the track (maybe someday) so it's just DD when the weather's nice. Are the 3.73s a good choice? What's the best brand to go with? As for the install, is this something my dealer can do? Most of the performance shops are a bit of a drive from where I live. Thanks for the advice

Just a little update....

Found a local shop that can take care of the install. What do you all think about the LPE 3.70 gears? I've done a bit of reading, and they seem like a very good choice. Is first gear still usable, or would 3.45 be a better ratio?

I have had the Richmond 3.73s and currently LPE 3.91s in my L99 and can say without a doubt, I would recommend the LPE 3.70s if your looking for a gear set in that ratio range. I would recommend them over the Richmond gears.

The reason, gear noise and strength. I had the spider gear in my posi unit go south and the stress cracked the ring gear on the Richmond set. Not the fault of Richmond. ALso, the Richmond gears, while not loud by any means, had a noticable gear whine at around 38-45 mph. Not bad, and I really did not notice it until I had the LPEs installed and had absolutely zero gear noise of any kind.

Cost a bit more but I would recommend the LPE gears.

Thanks man, that's what I was hoping to hear. I was going to order the LPEs online, but my local shop can order them direct from manufacturer (American Axle). If they order them and do the install, they will also give me a warranty in case anything goes wrong. If I supply them myself, they will only cover their work, but not the actual gears.

How did the 3.70s feel on the butt dyno?

With the 3.70, 1st gear is still very usable and you will be very happy you chose LPE gears. i wouldn't spend money on 3.45 unless it was very cheap.

Cool cool The place that might be installing them said they'll give me a 3-year warranty or something along those lines. Sounds pretty good, just waiting for a quote.

Gear choice should also be dependent on your modifications and how you drive the car both current and near future. With your current mods, I would suggest the LPE 3.70. If FI is in your future, you might want to consider a slightly smaller gear like a 3.55. Keep in mind that the 6L has a very low first gear ratio making traction a problem. Drag radials will be necessary at the track with this gear change unless you enjoy spinning.
