Strong Exhaust smell after build

So is it normal for a car to have a more intense exhaust odor after it's built than before it was? Seems like my car has a really rich, strong smelling exhaust now that I've cammed it, added headers, CAI, etc... Anyone else notice this? Is it normal?

i'm pretty sure it's normal, just going off of what i've read. i think the main cause is the cam and headers. might take a bit for them to break in. ik others will chime in and make me look like a noob lol

Totally normal. Even with the cats.

Especially with the cam. More unburnt fuel sneaking past. I thought mine was rich too at first and had the tuner check... nope, right on. You can't stand behind my car too long and it really makes the garage smell. I love it!

Nice car BTW!

Ok good. Just making sure. It runs like a champ, just much richer in those arotmatic exhaust overtones. I guess I'll have to say it's the smell of power.

Based on what everyone else is saying, and me having the same experience, I would think it's probably normal, but I'm no expert. I have the same set up. CAI, LT Headers, Highflow cats, SLP loudmouth exhaust, cam, milled heads.

this is something i forgot to ask before. so i realize when i had my cam done that the cam tends to smell little more. something to due with the valves being open longer. like you said more unburnt fuel sneaking past. if its just the nature of being cammed. then wouldn't this damage cats overtime ?

Depends on the cam specs. A cam with overlap (a high RPM cam that has intake and exhaust valves open at the same time) will pass some unburned fuel from the cylinders, especially at low RPMs. This effect is increased by tuned length headers, due to the scavaging effect which sucks the gasses out of the cylinders. I'm sure this will shorten the life of your cats as well as passing unburned fuel thru the exhaust.

I'm jumping in on the "its normal" tidal wave with a "me too". I'm no expert and have not stayed at a Holiday Inn Express lately either but I've noticed mine to smell a lot on a cold start and within a few minutes it gets better. Maybe the HF cats take a little longer to fire off and be effective than the stock ones - not to mention they are a lot smaller.

Youre exactly right, cold cats do basically nothing.

Ok, this is the second time one of my threads got moved. This was a general question about "Smell". It's not about exhaust systems. I can't figure these moderators out. Oh well.

it does belong here. its a question about after your cam or non facotry spec. this is a section about engine mods and exhaust. this is where you should have asked your question in the first place. anything that is mod related in your engine. post it here in this section.
