The dealership talked you into it, or was it the salesperson looking for a quick commission to pay his/her rent? Maybe your dealer had no allocations? Matters not -- all Camaros are awesome. I hope in reality you talked "yourself" into the 2SS Vert and didn't get brainwashed by a salesperson that won't be the one owning the vehicle. Godspeed and enjoy the hurricane wind through your hair with the top down!

This question is very subjective depending on your perspective towards your objective.

Subjective = Factory Hot Rod
Perspective = Expensive, but worth it
Objective = Driving a Factory Hot Rod, and not having to modify

So what would I do?
Purchase a Camaro ZL1 or any other Factory Hot Rod I can afford.

Some will finance it and can't afford the $30k on to to build a lower end car that still is not a ZL1.

Could you build one for WAY cheaper then $50k? Absolutely you could, in the end is it a ZL1?? Nope, and most people that are buying it want the exclusivity of a ZL1 not a car built to look like one.

Just my opinion.
ya. You couldn't build a ZL1 for less than 60k, but you can buy one for less than 60k.
You MAY be able to build a car competitive to the ZL1 in one area or another for less but I doubt it. ie: you could build a faster drag car for less no problem, and a faster road track car no problem, but not one that would do both, have a warranty on or off the track, and also be a comfortable touring car.

People miss the point on what a ZL1 is. Its an engineered multi use performance car, and one you cannot beat for the money.

Its really a bargain at this price.

Let's see...580hp, state of the art suspension and dual mode exhaust all covered under warranty..... you can build an SS, but not cover it all under warranty for 3+ years. Yes! The ZL1 is worth it!

For me this will be the 1st new car i have ever owned. I have waited several years and worked my ass off to get out of debt and save money for a new Camaro. Last year i sold my 01 SS to help fund the new ride. The ZL1 happend to come out at the right time for me (planets aligned). Im one for modding a car it keeps me busy and usually out of trouble. To have a car of this caliber be affordable and a warranty...Im sold right there. If i went out and bought a new SS i would put it out of warranty within a year from mods.

Price, Power, Warranty and Prestige.... I dont think ill regret getting this car

You're comparing a used SS to a brand new ZL1? :s

When u walk into a bar, do u look for the older gals that have been around the block or do u look for the younger better looking gals?

The ZL1 is a hot model, fresh out of college looking for a good time... You tell me u aren't gonna buy her a few drinks?

For me it's worth it my 2SS/RS is paid off, along with trade in and cash I'll be putting down 33k-36k, so my loan will be for about 20-23k at 2.25% APR. So for me it's a very wise decision.

Correct....It's been debated on internet sites since at least when the 2001 Z06 was produced. People with standard coupes said they could make up the HP difference with a few mods.

Then the same with the standard C6 when the C6 Z06 was introduced. Then the ZR1...and on it goes.

Can you mod your current LS3 to get to the same power levels as a ZL1 for less money than just buying a ZL1? Certainly.

But one more aspect of this issue is future trade-in value.

A true ZL1 will have alot more trade-in value if/when you trade it in at the dealer for 'The Next Big Thing' than a modded SS.

People will be much more apt to buy a used ZL1 than they would a modded SS.

If you have to ask, it isn't worth it to you. If you buy it with this question in mind, you will always look for justification and keep asking yourself why you spent $30k more than a used 2SS/RS. You are better suited for the SS.

The question as it is written is similar to those asking if we are worried about fuel economy.
It doesn't make sense.
Fuel could be 15 dollars a gallon, I'd still fill it up and go enjoy it. The pupose of the car is for recreation, not transportation.

Its like buying a Camry and then complaining you got beat by a Corvette in the twisty's.
The value is there for what you get in the ZL1, The question is only if you can justify the expense in your personal financial situation. That is it.

if i had the money yes i would love to have it! but if i like the 1LE i'll most likely go with that since it has everything the ZL1 has with the motor and blower and it'll be cheaper. still the ZL1 is a great buy

I would not be able to get rid of your car for nothing less than a 911 C2S or above. Going from one Camaro that's built to another that's factory built is not enough to justify the switch to me. If you had a stock SS I would totally understand, but with everything on yours....

Maybe if u want you have 30k to mod the crap out of your 2ss, possibly make it as good if not better than a zl1. I know i dont know as much as u guys who actually own a camaro. So tell me what u would do

My Opinion = Yes.

The ZL1 does so much so well. You simply cannot modify it to perform at the same levels (in all aspects) for less. If you could - it'd be a small failure on the part of Chevy...

Now....if you're only modifying a few things to achieve a specific goal, like say just a drag monster...that's different...

Now wrap that thought all up in a factory warranty that will cover you at the track...it's hard to beat. In my opinion.

Of course - this isn't pocket change. A potential buyer should think long and hard about what he/she REALLY intends to use the car for if money is a concern...

my first reaction when reading your post was " why would you have a Mercedes when you could have a ZL1????"

You cannot economically modify an SS to match the ZL1's performance on a road course -- and get the overall balance and refinement that the ZL1 offers.

trust me on this.

now - get rid of that Mercedes and learn what "Ultra-Grin" is all about!

Really? Does the Mercedes have thenair bag curtains? And if you had the control of the z, why would you ever need them? Hell I looked at buying a 2004 sl 500. Once you look at the car, I thought they were selling me a Taurus! Truth is, performancewas better, but it still looked like a Taurus with wipers on the headlights. It was new at the time, removeable hood leaked etc. I would never even consider the over priced mercedes. IMHO.
