ZL1 is a bargain

So the ZL1 is a bargain. A GT500 with all the necessary options to be able to run at a track will run you over $61,000. ZL1 comes with all the options like proper cooling for stuff. Just thought I'd say this

Yep I noticed that, with just the track options to have what comes standard on the ZL1 it,s over $60K and that doesn't include all the fancy radio stuff.

Truth is though, if I wanted a ZL1 in my options, I'd be paying closer to $65k to get the options I wanted.



Ford made a good move with their pricing on the GT500. I honestly expected it to be in the 60k range base price. People will be interested at the base price. Just depends on what they think about the cost of extra options. That will decide whether they stick with the GT500, go to a ZL1, or pick something else.

You could argue that for $54,995 you can get a car that has 650 Horsepower, 202MPH and a Forged Engine is a bargain too....

Even the base ZL1 is a bargain package. With the difference of what it will take for a GT500 to stick with a ZL!, you can mod the ZL1 to whoop it's butt....if the Camaro won't do it bone stock. Wish I had the bucks for a ZL1!

I agree. I am glad Ford gives the buyers the option to build the GT500 according to how they'll use it. As is, for the base price of $54,995, you are set for the strip which I believe where most buyers will run their cars. If you want to go chasing a ZL1 around a track, then spend more to get the SVT-PP option....but even at $60k+, you are still getting the 650hp motor which you can't get with the ZL1. Complaining about a few thousand $ difference when comparing two cars that compete vs one another is just reaching, IMHO. I will be leaving my ZL1 stock and it will never see a straight track.

truth of it they are both very expensive for a mustang or a camaro they just happen to back it up. Niether of these cars came in at the 50k that I wanted to pay for my next car so I am not calling them bargains IMO. 55-60k a car better bring it.

to me the difference between the two is splitting hairs. for 61,495 you can have a track ready GT500. for 61,495 I could eaisly have a 650hp ZL-1 with a manual the auto could cost more. some people will say the GT500 is better for drag racing but personally if I were drag racing at my local track I think I would want the AUTO wich the GT500 did not bring to the table. IF I were street drag racing then the base gt500 is where it is at.

bottom line buy the one you like the looks of as that is the hardest thing to change ha ha.

the real advantage to the ZL-1 is the suspension adjustablity and you can get an auto if that is your thing, the real advantage of the gt500 is the 650hp forged motor and scalable options.

Do we even know what it will take for the 2013 GT500 to stick with the ZL1 yet? We assume a base GT500 without the PP and TP won't be able to match the ZL1 on a road course, but we don't know it.

What happens if the base GT500 puts up numbers equal to the ZL1 at VIR?

In my opinion, both cars are performance bargains for what you are getting in that segment.

Not if you want to keep the warranty intact. A track ready GT500 is still covered under the factory warranty. A ZL1 modified to make 650hp would not be.

Dragoneye saw the GT500 numbers for VIR while he was there and assured us that it wasn't faster than the ZL1. He wouldn't say what the time was though. The margin could be huge, or it could be minimal. By the way he said it, I don't think it was that close. Just an assumption though. I wonder if they(Ford) will release the times for VIR.

The GT500 with a solid rear axle and no MIR is just a straightline car ,its going to have problems putting its power to the ground.

The Boss 302 handles as well as the M3 with a solid rear axle.....

The M3 is an amazing car too just for the record and out performing it for half the price is amazing....

Hmmmm....must have missed that one. Wonder what number he saw? To my knowledge, the 2013 GT500 does not have a VIR time yet.

I find this statement hard to believe. If he did, it would be plastered all over this site. Besides, it would have been leaked out by the media by now.

I found it. All he said is that GM noted that the ZL1 lapped VIR 6 seconds faster than the fastest recorded GT500 time on the same course.

No doubt. That must have been the 2011 GT500. It ran a 2:58.48 which, by the way, was 9 seconds faster than the 2010 GT500. Not sure if the 2013 GT500 can pick up a similar margin over the 2011, but with 100 more HP, bigger/better brakes, stickier tires and improved gearing it should be considerably faster. Time will tell.

Totally agree with all your points here hognutz. It's all about what you want to use it for. And if I could afford it, I'd definately have 1 of each
