Trade '12 SS M Steering Wheel for 10-11 SS M

Looking to trade my 2012 2SS (Leather) Manual steering wheel for a 10' - 11' SS steering wheel (Leather).

Steering wheel is brand new and in mint condition. Bought car on 3/31/2012. For convenience, I would like to arrange for a swap with someone living in GA. I've been told the dealer will need to re-program the airbag once the swap is done.

Also, if interested, I would like to swap speedometer gauges for the old ones too. PM for details.

From what I have been told, yes. The steering wheels are a direct swap. the only thing that needs to be done is the re-programming for the air bag. I'm writing to the dealership so I can have written confirmation.

I'll keep you on the list for sure. Waiting to get written confirmation from dealer how much and what reprogramming will need to be done before I male any sudden moves. If all goes well, and depending on the distance, I have a good relationship with the dealership, so i may be able to get it done for free.

I hesitant to take the wheel off myself. Even with the battery disconnected, I heard horror stories of the air bag deploying.

So, I just wrote to my dealership about switching out the steering wheel and gauges. Here's what he had to say.

"On today’s cars swapping an instrument panel cluster is nearly impossible due to the fact that the cluster is technically a module, which is VIN specific. As far as the steering wheel is concerned, swapping any part that is tied to the air bag system is a huge liability for us and I am going to politely decline to be involved with that process. The biggest concern for us is that both of these requests fall into an “uncharted territory” category for us and GM does not have any resources available to us if something were to not work out. We look forward to serving your future needs on your current vehicle."

OK, how much truth is there to this? Will it void my warranty if i swap them out? And was there any programming needed for the gauges? If not, I could simply swap them out myself.

I understand. No problem. My biggest concern is "Will it void my warranty?"

I understood it as saying they don't want go do the swap because if you were to get into a crash and your air bag didn't deploy they don't want to be potentially at risk because you air bag didnt deploy and you injured yourself because an air bag that is part of the steering wheel did not function properly

Did you ever end up swapping the steering wheel?

I know lots of people have changed out the rubber wheel for the leather ones without problems..

Unfortunately, it isn't looking too good at the moment. I can't find a dealership willing to do the swap due to liability issues. I was able to get my hands on the gauges that I wanted, but same case. The dealer says it is VIN specific and that they won't do it :(

Any suggestions from anyone?

How is the instrument panel vin specific? I don't buy that. What happens if your instrument panel fails? Don't they just install a new one and program it to the car?

The steering wheel sounds rather risky to me. If you got badly injured because it didn't deploy and the insurance company found out it wasn't what came on the car, they might deny you bodily injury claims.

As far as warranty goes, any warranty on the steering wheel and cluster would be voided, as they would no longer be the original parts on the car.
