If I had a spare tire.....

Let me first say that driving a car without a spare tire is wrong. I just caught a flat on my Camaro and no matter what you do or who you call you have to get your car towed.

My tire got a 2" gash on the side of the tire and that air pump in the trunk is useless. After waiting 4 hours And a $150.00 later to go 9 miles was so aggravating. I'm more than capable of changing a tire so all the wait and all that money could of been avoided if "I had a spare tire"......

Sorry I just had to vent.....

This is why I've been contemplating getting that spare tire kit they sell complete with spare tire and tools.

I don't blame you, I'm old school I guess. Got me a spare kit off e-bay a week after I found out that all we get is a pump & some sealer last year.

what i did to avoid the spacer needed for the spare (which I'm not comfortable with in the first place) was to buy a 5th oem 20" rim and a used tire... cut a hole in the trunk liner and bought a truck spare tire cover... all in all it only protrudes from the spare well about 2 inches in the camaro

here is a pic when I did it on my G35 coupe to give you an idea... it takes up even less room in the camaro .. ill take a pic tomorrow if i remember

That's really cool. I just happen to be selling an extra 20x8 wheel w/tire. $150 shipped compared to $500 for the Ebay kit

I'm in the same boat as you guys. I was thinking about the spare tire kit, but don't really like the idea of using an adaptor. BronxxBombers's solution really has me intrigued. Even buying the pieces new, I think its a better way to go.

So, I'd have to get the wheel and tire (front size - 245-45-20) and then get the jack, wrench, foam container from the dealer, then find a tire cover for a 20" wheel. Does that sound about right??

I'm guessing the full size wheel/tire will fit into the wheel well along with the battery, won't it?

Hope Bronxx's gets some pics posted.

How would camaro104 be all set ?....
AAA would still have to tow his car to a tire store or dealer. I doubt they carry 20" SS tires and wheel around in their truck.
On extended trips I put an extra Front tire/wheel in the trunk with a tow strap- That along with AAA and I'm all set.
I've shown this many times:

You guys who say I have AAA and set aren't getting the big picture. Especially if you are on a road trip outside of big cities, even if you get a tow, most tire stores don't have our size tires sitting there waiting, they have to order them from a wholesaler, which can take hours or days depending on where you are. Local, I don't worry about it, but on a trip I carry a front tire/wheel so I am not stuck somewhere waiting...when it happens to you, you'll understand why AAA isn't enough....

Agree 100%....i dont take my Camaro on long trips so i chose the OEM spare option just so i can get it back home. After that i can do whats necessary to fix the flat. Those who seem concerned about using an adapter....Why?? You will only be driving the car home or to a shop. Even if you do have to travel a longer distance you will have no issues as long as you tighten everything properly. I chose a well made hub-centric adapter.

True not everybody is gettin the picture, on star, AAA is not going to help if your tire has a big gash on the side of it. You have to get the car towed no matter what. And if it happens on a Sunday what then. I spend about $500.00 for towing and a new tire not including the gash I got on my new rims when installing the tire, Nightmare!!!!!

We all need to have a spare tire in our cars. I could of changed it, drove it home and took care of it he next day. Saving my self towing and embarrassment.....

I listened to what FEN & SUX2BU had to say and glad I did. I bought a 2 1/2" spacer and spare tire kit. Fits over roller skate Brembo brakes with no issues at all.

Well worth the investment. Spare tire fits right over the battery. Only trunk space lost is a bag to keep a breaker bar/socket, spacer, screwdriver to insert in caliper to stop rotating (if front flat).

Peace of Mind = Priceless.

Thanks to FEN & SUX2BU for doing leg work/research.

Cheers

I also have the issue of being lowered and GFX.....so even using a flat bed is a PITA as the strap they use to hoist the car hits the front splitter even if using boards to help the approach angle. Having the spare is great piece of mind in knowing i can avoid all the headaches...wait,damage to GFX,no tires available, tow fees, etc.

So if I go with a factory 20", which would be best, front or rear rim, front or rear tire size?

Most use a front wheel/tire. They are a little narrower so they take up less space and can be purchased used a lot cheaper. The tire diameters are both the same.

ok, solution...

i JUST went through this...1. your car has free roadside that covers the tow to a chevy dealer...i used it 2 weeks ago for this reason...since your car doesnt have a spare.
2. when you call, specify that you have a LOW car...and that a regular flat bed wont work...they need to call one with a folding ramp (a low boy), and then drive it up slowly (thats what my i did, while the guy changed the angles a bit to avoid clearence issues). wood blocks or not....my car isnt gettin on a regular flat - been there done that!!!
3. then if you have time, find a used tire (craigslist etc) to get thrown on the car to get ya back on the road...cause chances are your tires are pretty used anyway, and you wont wanna be buying new set just yet...

Thanks, the dealer I bought my car from replaced one front and one rear rim on my car before I bought it, (the originals were curbed). I was there a couple months ago, the originals were still there. Thinkin I might go make the parts guy an offer on the front one now.
