Warranty voided for tinted windows - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I'll start off by saying this is not on my camaro but on my wife's 2010 tahoe. The drivers side inside door handle was broken and wasn't opening the door. So I took it to the dealership thinking "No problem it's still under the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Well they tell me its a certain part on the inside of the door but they won't cover the work under warranty because the windows are tinted and it appears that the window tinters took the door panel off. I had the tahoe tinted the day I bought it in 2010 in South Carolina, I am now in Hawaii. How would they be able to tell if the door panel was taken off and who cares if it was? I emailed chevy twice to ask about this and try to get it settled but they never emailed me back. My wife called them and finally chevy called back and said it's up to the dealer if they want to fix it under warranty or not and they didn't want to but they would give me 15% off the part and labor. And since I'm in Hawaii I only have 2 choices of dealerships and they both said no. Anyone else had anything as stupid as this? This is really turning me away from Chevy.

ouch! It might just be the dealer. My last car I had a window regulator problem still under warranty with tinted windows that were not done at their dealership. They still fixed the regulator and gave me a credit towards getting the window retinted. I try to have a good relationship with dealers for times like these

Tell the dealer that they need to prove that your tinted windows broke the part. If they can't prove it then they have to do it under warranty.

Perhaps they found broken clips on the door panel. This would hint that the door panel was taken off incorrectly.

Seems like the two of them are covering each others back. Try getting the window tint installers point of veiw as to why a dealership would reject their work. See if they stand behind their work.

They're dumb as a box of rocks. Most tinters have absolutely no reason to take a panel off. They flip the top lip down, or have other means of getting the tint below the "wipe" on the top of the panel. When they're done, just pop the lip back in place and done. Time is money and they're not wasting effort on removing panels when there's easy ways around it. The Camaro tint job was the same. He didn't remove a single panel.

Mental retardation aside, there's no "magical wear" from a phillips screwdriver used by your tint guy and the assembly plant that originally built the Camaro. This isn't the old days where pop tabs break and doors are a huge PITA. Your dealers service manager is stuck in the 80s.

That's stupid, since the tint was done in 2010, now almost 2 years later the drivers door handle broke?

Sounds like they don't want to fix the car.

I don't think this is really a Chevy problem so much as it is a Hawaii Chevy dealer problem. I was stationed in Hawaii for several years and I used to have an S-10 (new at the time). Being as there were only 2 dealerships to go to, they knew they had you trapped, and they were both shady as hell. I never had a problem with my truck until I took it to the one on (I think Nimitz) by the airport, for regular maintenance, at which point I had problem after problem, almost magically. They actually caused a problem with my fuel lines that they refused to fix, stating that I couldn't prove it was them, even though the fuel smell in my truck was not there until I picked it up from the dealership. I hate to say it, but you're not gonna win with them. They are shady, and if you are military, they're even less likely to help you. I'm sure you've figured out how that goes by now.

I'm really sorry to hear about this spacecowboy. I'm not personally familiar with Hawaii myself (though I'd like to acquaint myself with the place some time). If there are other GM dealers than the 2 Chevrolet dealers you mention then you can take it to them. If not let me know and I'll do what I can to try and help you. Also you say that your wife spoke with us. Did she get a case number from that phone call? If so I'd like to look it over. Thank you for your time.

I had a worse experience at a Mazda dealer.... So I had subwoofers installed in my truck and a couple years later a bolt on the shifter came loose and I was unable to switch gears. They tried to deny my warranty work because they claimed that whoever installed the subwoofers must've disconnected the shifter and put the bolt on upside down to route the wiring.

First off, I knew this was BS because I wired the crap myself and only went under the carpet and didn't go anywhere near the transmission!

But the second and most distubing part of it all was that I told them that soon after getting my truck my clutch throw bearing had gone out and they replaced it under warranty. They claimed that they never did the work. I had to find the 2 year old paperwork and prove that they had in fact done the work. And as soon as I did that, would you believe that they magically found the record in the computer too??? They then fixed the problem because the procedure had required them to remove the very bolt in question...

But the funniest part was that the service rep, who was a total jerk, made a note in my file not to repair any electronic related issues under warranty due to the custom installed subwoofer.... I didn't even come in for electronic-related work. The guy just had issues I suppose.

This is when you find a new dealer. I have a 2010 Silverado 1500. I tinted the windows,custom exhaust, and oh yes a 6" inch lift kit with 35" tires and my local chevy dealer warranties every little thing I bring it in for.

Bought my car from here. If you dont modify your car, they're good. Strict and almost like government. They dont sell over list so avoid markup for high demand models. Low allocations. Their one black ZL1 will probably be lottery since they're not taking orders and do not show favoritism.
