Torque wrench help
So I had a
moment today. I got a new torque wrench (the first one I've used or owned) and I was testing it out. I had it set to 5 ft-lbs or something, found a bolt to tighten and went at it. I didn't hear the wrench "click" so I kept tightening and tightening and still nothing happened. Finally after playing around with some other bolts, I heard the "click", or actually saw it. The part where the handle connects to the head of the wrench sort of gave way and moved ever do slightly.Sooo...I think what happened at first was that the bolt was already tighter than the setting on the wrench, so it clicked right away, but I missed it, so I kept going. Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly, but what I'm wondering is, if you keep using a tq wrench to tighten something after it "clicks" at it's set value, will the wrench be damaged or will the calibration be screwed up?? Won't be making this mistake again, but I was expecting a much louder click or pop. In reality, it's very subtle.

Do they click louder at higher tq settings? At the lowest settings, it's hardly noticeable. It's a CDI (snap-on) 5-75 ft-lb wrench.

Its possible. Its been a while since ive used one. If you plan on tqing something important try and make it click 5 times at the lowest setting to get the internals lubed up right.... it helps keep the wrench in good shape... if you have any questions on it pm me and Ill try and answer it here so that others will see it too. I used them a lot in the military working on aircraft.

Just don't over toque the drain plug and strip it out. 18ft lb ain't much. I'm sure you know though. Just trying to look out for ya.

The higher the torque, the louder the click. At 5ft/lbs, the wrench will just kind of give way, at 75, it will really snap. Click type torque wrenches are very durable, and hardly ever need recalibration.
