Respecting your neighbors... Reducing cold start volume

I'm moving soon to a single family home neighborhood and know my cold start volume would wake the dead. Has anyone found a solution to temporarily reduce exhaust volume on cold start?

I found these through an older thread, but have been unable to find any feedback, also I'm concerned about possible engine damage if it choaks the exhaust too much.

http://www.carchemistry.com/shop/ind...duct_list&c=76

I also reached out to Borla for their thoughts, and will post their response.

Thanks~

Buy all of your neighbors earplugs... hey, at least you can say you tried!

My neighbors joke about it, but mine is not a DD so it isn't often. They tell me if they hear it start up during the week, they don't need the check the weather and know it's not going to rain.

Start the car with the garage door closed. Then you will just wake up everyone else in your house.

I doubt there's much you can do about it other than change your exhaust to something quieter. Maybe you could start it with the garage door down a few seconds as someone suggested, but if your car is like mine the exhaust is pretty strong right after starting and your house will smell.

If the houses are a decent distance apart and well constructed maybe it won't bother your neighbors. Just take it easy within a couple blocks of home. We've got a guy 2 houses down that just bought an old Japanese motorcycle with no muffler. He holds it at 4000 or 5000 RPM for 2 or 3 minutes immediately after starting every time, then blasts off like he's in a race. If you don't behave like that, maybe your neighbors won't mind your car.

I'm moving into a townhome complex next month with garage bays basically as the ground floor of the units. They're all side by side and it's one of the middle units I'll be in.

Really hoping my Solo Performance Mach XL with Hi Flows doesn't create too much bedroom resonance...

Good luck... I made a post that spanned 4 pages, detailing my neurotic neighbor's anger with my stock exhaust.

You've got no chance.

I live out in the country now on 2 acre lots and we picked the lot furthest to the back and side of the neighborhood (cotton fields on 2 sides of me) so the 5:30am start is not so much the problem as is the driving through the neighborhood. I just try to more or less idle until I get out on the main road. Doesn't seem to bother anyone too much. And can't be any more annoying then the disels and harley's moving through the neighborhood.

Push your car down the street and then start it. Then you'll kill two birds with one stone.

You'll get your workout in and keep the neighbors around you happy. LOL

When you move in, buy everyone beer, take all the kiddies for rides in your car ( preferably before the beer... ) and make nice-nice with them. Might ease things over...

Mine sounds like a volcano erupting, so I brought the car over to the house I was moving into a few weeks before I moved in, parked it out front on a sunny day, and before long, all the guys in the neighborhood were standing around it staring. I've been busy making friends for the last week, in hopes that when I bring the car down for good, it ( I ) don't anger people.

Electric cutouts. Of course, that would require changing your current setup so that it's actually quieter with the cutouts closed.

Try to have a good relationship with your neighbors and let them know your doing everything possible to respect them and there peace. Just letting them know you are aware and that you care is enough to let them forgive the noise. But we all know some neighbors will always be "stinkers"
My neighbors said it wasn't as loud when the exhaust faced away from the building when I started it, so I parked in such a way it didn't echo off the buildings. Other neighbors said they got a car "woodie" every time I drove by.

i'm good to my neighbors, have a Cavalier I drive to work in the mornings(usually leave out about 4:30)... and so they don't complain on me and have grown used to my cars being loud and fast... just like today, neighbor is outside putting sealant on his deck, I fire the car up really for the 1st time since the headers have gone on... I look over, and he's giving me the thumbs up, lol

of course he and his wife are in their 20s(like myself) so I don't have the old prudes across the street or anything... they just moved out about a year ago, lol...

Old prudes? I'm no doubt old enough to qualify in your mind as are many of the other members. The other day a beat up pickup with 2 guys who must have been in their 80's stopped next to me at a light and and one yelled "that's the best sounding car I've heard for a long time." I've gotten a lot more dirty looks from the 30 and 40 year old greenies in Priuses than from older folks.
