Improve the non BA factory stereo - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I have a 1SS with the standard (non Boston Acoustics) stereo system. While it is ok most of the time, my car is rather loud now with cam and headers. When I ride with the windows down I have to turn the stereo up to the point of distortion in order to hear the music.

I was wondering what upgrades could be made while still using the factory head unit (i'd rather not hack up my dash with a new unit). Could a amp and new speakers be added? Any suggestions on brands, and expected costs? My budget would be about $1,000.00
