Navigation system with i pod integration options

I really really like the look of the camaro's interior...but i don't like that onstar crap...i would prefer to see maps and not have to deal with somebody giving me directions on the phone

perhaps if gm actually offered a regular navigation option instead of hiring telemarketers maybe they would have more reserves in the bank...just saying

but anyway what can i do custom wise that won't destroy the sleek look of the interior??? its going to have to be something like a pop up screen but that area is so small i can't see it being possible

I added a simple Garmin GPS and mounted next to the mirror, it looks cool and if functional.

IMHO, GM was smart not spending any money on NAV. for Camaro. It's obsolete (vs. aftermarket units) before it's out -- not to mention lousy use of dash space. I've had GM systems in '03 CTS and 07 Tahoe -- not worth anything close to the $2500 price.

If you see a benefit in NAV, you're better off with a good aftermarket unit.

Thats actually incorrect some automakers units now get OTA (or sometimes in house) software updates and are never obsolete, like Fords new navi with sync and I believe Audi as well.

thats what i meant...but my iphone screen is too small and requires me to look away from the road to view it correctly...with a proper sized gps all it takes is a quick glance to know the right turn is .5 miles away

i'd also like to integrate the whole iphone into the navigation system where you can go through individual songs and what not...

i know i know i'm picky...but this is literally my only gripe with the car

the iphone is the best all in one solution out right now between, music, internet and GPS navigation. As soon as they release the iPhone OS 3.0, the GPS nav available for the iPhone will go through the roof as far as peformance... That's what I plan on using!

I love NAV but if you are like me, I only need it maybe 3 times per year. The Garmin can plug into the cars audio system and give me voice commands over the car's speakers. The suction cup mounting is fine for occaisonal use on top of the dash or on the windshield.

I don't plan on taking too many out of town trips with my Camaro anyway. We have a Honda Odysee for that.

A car company would have to force me to buy a factory installed NAV. I would not want to pay the big bucks for it.

i have to again say that onstar will tell you that....even faster. it tells you the distance and the direction of the turn, and it tekes half a glance to read, and its in the DIC anyway....the difference is...the directions are ALL you see

Nav systems are a waste of space IMO. If you don't know how to get where you are going before you get into your car you should take the time to find out. The On-star is there for that reason and I don't see using it that often. I think Nav systems are more a "keeping up with the Jones" deal and a distraction. I am glad they did not put one in the Camaro. If it is that big a deal go with Garmin, Iphone, Tom-Tom or something like that. To each his own....

Hey now, I'm a Jones and I just bought my first portable nav system last Christmas. Don't try to keep up with me or you'll find yourself miserably behind the pack.

OnStar turn by turn does not operate this way. You call OnStar, give them an address or location and your directions are downloaded.

After that is acts exactly like you NAV except you don't have a pretty color display.

In the DIC and Radio you get distances, road names turn arrows with voice prompts, all downloaded. The OnStar operator no longer reads you directions.

It really is a great system...............if you can get past the lack of a color display that costs $2,000 plus.

I live near Pearland and have been out to Pasadena a few times since moving here.

You aren't the only one Jones'n for your Camaro (without built-in nav)...soon...

Beat me to it Number 3.

Personally I don't see why you would WANT another type of nav system where you have to actually input all of the data yourself. Just hit the button tell the operator where you wanna go.... and BAM downloaded. Screw typing... I'm too lazy for that trash. Not to mention that most OEM nav systems have big bulky controls and screens which can distract from the overall layout of the interior IMO.

On another note, I plan on having some fun with the Onstar operators and asking for directions to ridiculous places for fun... like Australia for example. And having an operator input directions for strip clubs will never get old.

i have an i phone and I deffinately wouldn't say the navigation is awesome. It works but its nothing like a standalone unit. As someone stated above v3.0 will fix all this and the iphone WILL work just like a navigation unit. A matter of fact magellon is supposedly already developing an ap for the iphone based on the new v3.0. How true that is i don't know but I read it somewhere.
