Amp and subwoofer

So I'm looking to get this subhttp://www.jlaudio.com/12w3v3-4-car-...-drivers-92154 but I have no clue what amp to get for it. I also heard something about replacing the stock amp with a better one and wire the sub into that for better results but it seems like a pricey way of doing things. Could anyone recommend an amp for me?

well, just me but its a 2ohm sub so you need to buy a 2ohm mono amp to power it.

But i would problly go with 2, 12" 4ohm subs in a box and wire them into 2ohms

I just put in 2-12" kicker subs paid $180 shipped, custom box for 2-12" paid $120 and 1 MTX audio 1000 watt 2ohm amp for $180 shipped. just installed it and the bass blows the roof off.. still making some adjustments and using deadening mat too

I'm just looking to have one sub. for now at least. there's a 4ohm version though so would it make a difference getting that instead?

I would suggest getting the 2-ohm version of the sub. This will allow you to get the most power out of your amplifier. You can then get a mono sub amp and run it at 2-ohms.

Here are a few amps that will give you the exact amount of power you would need for the 2-ohm version. I really like the JL amp in this list!

amp speaker

well i think it all depends on wether you are going to update you system anytime soon as far as a 2ohm speaker and amp.

If you later upgrade to another 2ohm amp in a box i dont think you could run both in parrell without getting a diff amp. If you do 2- 4ohm subs and wire they in parell it will give to 2ohm load.

Maybe someone else can chime in but i think it how long before u upgrade. I had a 10 inch and it didnt do that much

I mean your looking at about prob $300 shipped for that 1- 12inch. I paid $180 shipped for 2- 12inch MTX VT subs and $180 for a 1000 watt mtx amp

If you hook a 2 ohm sub up to an amp that's not designed to put power out at 2-ohms, you're going to screw your amp, or your woofer, or both. If you only want 1 sub, get a 4 ohm sub. Or a 2ohm sub with dual voice coils wired in parallel for 4 ohms. If you want 2, you can get two 8 ohm subs and wire them in parallel. The possibilities are really endless. And save the money and get a good sub amp. JL amps are good at almost any impedance you put to them because of how their power supply works.

Wired in series, not parallel.

You guys make some valid points, but I'd still be more likely to stick with the 2-ohm version for now unless you are going to upgrade to two of the subs quickly. If so, plan ahead with the amp. Kalimus, you are correct that some amps aren't stable at 2-ohms, but that tends to be when you are bridging channels on an amp. This is the reason I'd stick with a mono amp when powering sub(s). They are all stable at 2-ohms, and some lower.

If going to include two informative links on subs, amps, and wiring of the two in case it's helpful:

I got ahead of myself. I was thinking of a pair of DVC's that had the voice coils wired in parallel and then the pair wired in series. I didn't even pick the right impedance. At least i got the dual 8ohm subs with the correct word haha. It happens sometimes when I get a lot of options running through my head.

Go with this, you can't go wrong. It is all plug and play and replaces the original amp.

The factory amp is located in the top left quarter panel in the trunk, behind the wheelwell cover. Yes it does power all the speakers in the car.

The set-up I have eliminates the center speaker. It sounds a lot better without it. The amp I have works really well. I am not a stereo expert by no means, just go to subthump.com and he will hook you up and help you through the troubleshooting phase also.

So I went to subthump and still couldn't find it and now that thread is goneWhat the heck?... Anyway, so I'm under the impression that replacing the factory amp(non BA) and disconnecting the center speaker will improve the quality of sound from the stock speakers?

Do you have a BA stereo system in your car?

I didn't think non-ba cars had amps in them.

I do not have the BA system. Would that change things?

Everytime I read BA I assume it's badazz instead of Boston acoustics

Well since you don't have the BA system then you don't have a center speaker....and since you don't have the BA I'm fairly sure you don't have an amp....and since you don't have an amp you can't do subthumps plug and play kit...

but here is what I did in my first Camaro (non BA)...

I had a Memphis 500.1 hooked to a kicker CVX 10'' and it pounded. I took that out when I traded it in for the SS...its actually sitting on my floor in my room...thinking about putting it in the SS but I love that subthump kit above.

Now that I have a BA I'm gonna replace the factory AMP with something better and use the plug and play kit.
