Solo "J" Pipe Axle Back, back fires @start up

Just installed a Solo "J" pipe axle back exhaust, no other mods.
what's happening is after driving the car and shutting it off for awhile
and then go to start it back up you get a somewhat loud pop, like the engine back fired. any ideas on what could be happening.
other than that it sounds and runs great.
thanks for any input
dan

My stock setup does this as well.

Its normal. The J pipes seem to amplify the sound so thats why youre hearing it.

Is it a "pop" sound? There should be a few pops along with some crackling and burbling. Nothing ear-splitting though. That's normal and as others have said, the stock exhaust does it too, it's just muffled a lot more when it's stock. If you were getting a real backfire, that would sound more like a firecracker or a .22 caliber gunshot. Maybe not as loud as those but you get the idea of the type of sound.

The sound that I'm getting is one pop, like a ballon popping.only does it after driving
20 miles or so and letting the car sit for a few minites then restarting the engine.
is this normal with the solo "J" pipes.
thanks

Its Okay! Do not worry about it, enjoy it. Get headers and give it a morning start and it will turn that "pop" into a "dragon snarl".

You're fine. The Solo axleback will do that from time to time. They are designed to a raw yet refined rumble. They pull it off better then anyone in the game if you ask us!

well I've run with the solo "J" pipes now for almost a week, I like the sound of them when you get on it, but when you're cruising and the AFM kicks in it sounds like shit.
sounds like your running one of those small 4cyln cars with the big open muffler.
It's a shame that GM would even think of going with AFM on a car like this.
I wish I would of researched it a little more, I would of gone with the manual.
I'm going to give it a little more time to see if I get use to it, put leaning towards
putting the stock exhaust back on and leaving it at that.
just my thoughts, if you got the L99 forget about any type of aftermarket exhaust
unless you get rid of the AFM.
I believe this is why GM does not offer their performance exhaust for the L99 only
for the manual.

Why not just get a tuner and turn the AFM off? I think that any of the handhelds will do it and there's always one or two for sale in the classifieds here. Don't know if the autos will do it, but my favorite thing in my car is when I'm downshifting and using the engine to slow down. It sounds like a small caliber machine gun going off!

Oh, and I believe I read on here that if you switch to manual shift mode or whatever it's called (use the paddles) it turns the AFM off automatically. But don't quote me....

I just have the Solo axle-back with J-pipes and before I got my headers and tune I never really noticed the AFM. Maybe thats because I still have the big can in the middle and yours it the cat-back. Just tune it out, after an exhaust it wont be long till you give in like us all you'll crave more power.

I would tune the AFM out in a minute if it didn't void the warrenty.
It just sucks that you pay big bucks for these cars, then have to spend more to make them right, reminds me of Harley Davidson.

This is the first complaint I've seen on the Solo j-pipes.
I put these axle backs on my L99 when they first came out and love them.
I can't detect the AFM and I get no drone at any RPM.
I've never had to touch mine, but I think they are adjustable.

I've adjusted mine in and out and seems to make no difference, I do not get any cabin drone, but you can feel and hear the AFM kicking in and out, when your're in the AFM mode, the car sounds like a 4 banger with an load muffler.
where do you have your "J" pipes adjusted at.
I've done mine in 1/4 at a time in and then out, cannot find a sweet spot where there's minimal in detecting the AFM

^^^ Like I said I've never had to adjust my Solo j-pipes.
I think the problem may be in your car and not the exhaust as
I never could hear the AFM in my SS- Not when it was stock, and not now.

Would you have preferred to pay a gas guzzler tax at the time of purchase?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_Guzzler_Tax

Even those of us with manuals have to put up with CAGS (computer aided gear selection, or skip-shift), though that's easily defeated with a $20 mod. GM made a conscious decision to do annoying things like this that increase the EPA estimated fuel economy so that we don't have to pay the tax, and in turn, sell more cars.

This morning, mine fired off like a cannon as I was headed up Coast Highway. Love that sound. I always get a "What the F@#k" when it happens with other people around. LoL!

well kept adjusting the "J" pipe, things seemed to keep improving when shortening the
"J" pipe, got it as short as it would go, so I pulled the adjustment pipe from the "J" pipe and cut off another 1/2 inch, put it all back together, the AFM is still noticable but not nearly as bad as it was, it is sounding much better thoughout the intire RPM range, getting a little more decel popping, but that is fine, in fact sounds nice.
I'm going to leave it at that and see how it goes.
don't know why I had to go this short. O well it's sounding better.
thanks for all the replies.

I also hear that the exhaust "breaks in". And I noticed a different sound from when I bought my car to today with 3k miles on it with the stock, so im sure the SOLO kits will do the same thing

Most likely you'll eventually do a tune and then be very pleased with the sound under all conditions. fwiw I can hear the sound difference when follwing behind a L99 and it's not good. Tune it or muffle it.

Oh and the starting of a hot engine making a loud pop. Happens to me all of the time. I'm careful when I start up at a gas station. That kind of pop could give someone a heart attack. If I see a person that could be proned to such a thing, I'll crack my throttle slighly to prevent or lessen the pop.
