conversation w/ dealer on death of ZL1, SS and all V8's

Was at my dealer for my 15K mile check up on my 2010 SS. Talked to the sales guy I ordered my car from back in 2008 to find out when they were going to have their first ZL1 hit their lot.

He was telling me about the 2015 fuel mileage standards and how it would be the death of the big V8's. We are going to start to see twin turbo V6's or V4's instead of the big HP V8's. I know there are far more knowledgeable guys on this topic but next year would likely be the last year for cars like the ZL1, SS, or the Z06 Corvette.

I would be interested in hearing from some people that are more up on this topic than me. What kind of HP do you think we will be seing when the mileage standards become law in 2015? Does it mean the big V8's will be worth more money, or go by way of the dinosaur?

They probably will be offering turbo V6's and such but i doubt V8's will be gone any time soon as people love big torque. Just like today the standard they have takes into account all of the manufacturers vehicles for an avg. Say the threshold is 35MPG. So... you sell a million 40MPG vehicles and 20,000 that get 15MPG your average is still very high and over the 35MPG standard.

I believe the mileage standards are a fleet wide average. you will probably still be able to get these cars with big engines, but they will most likely be limited production.

Your Sales Guy is misinformed on CAFE Standards...ZL1's and SS's and big V8's aren't going away anytime soon.. The HP war is just starting to heat up!!!

Not in America pal. They will probably increase and expand the gas guzzler tax though.

We are allowed our vices as long as we are willing to pay.

They have to reach a "combined" number for CAFE or EPA standards. So with other cars in the line up helping them acheive those numbers we should see the V8's going forward, how long will they remain?? Can't say but I would think for at least another 10 plus years. No replacement for displacement!!

if that's the case, you V8 guys better keep your cars since they're gonna be worth a lot more if that does happen in the future

These V-8s aren't that "big"....they are no where near the gas-hogs of older, even smaller V-8s....Sort of a stigma from the past, that just isn't the case these days.

If that is true that would suck since the camaro literally just came back.

For every 100 camaros they make/sell there is 1000's of sonics high MPG cars sold why do you think you don't see As many Camaro Commercials as opposed to Sonics or high MPG cars?

V8 is here to stay, look for higher efficiency motors in the future with more HP/TQ and better MPGs....

Im sure GM has a big ole 7.0L in a basement of a Top Secret Laboratory that gets 50 miles to the gallon on 87 Octane while putting down 590 to the rear wheels. And yes I am one of those conspiracy driven individuals.

Thats all folks.

"Sales guy" is a 'tard. Next year is not the last year of the ZL1, SS, Z06, or ZR1. Or the Viper, GT500, SRT8, or any other engine that's not a V6 or smaller. CAFE is Corporate AVERAGE fuel economy. Hybrids and electrics will be more prevalent, but the high HP V8s aren't going away that fast. Wait until you see the next gen engines from GM. Smaller displacement, direct injection, but still the small block V8. With more power and better fuel economy.

CAFE stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy. That means that cars like the Volt, Sonic, Spark, and all the Eco models in Chevy's line up are pulling the average up for us V8 enthusiasts. We already know that the Gen V LS engines are just around the corner and will utilize direct port fuel injection in combination with high compression ratios to achieve both better performance and fuel efficiency. Have no fear. The V8 isn't going anywhere.

With all due respect to people like Becky who are active within the enthusiast community, there is no group of people who knows less about cars, on average, than car dealers. I've found over the course of 30 years dealing with them that they tend to be less informed than anybody who reads "Car & Driver" regularly.

V8 engines won't go away. They will become more efficient and, likely, smaller. Direct injection and variable valve timing will become standard in the next generation of V8 motors, power will break the 100 hp/l mark and specific fuel consumption will decrease.

It's likely that by 2016 or so the GM engine in the Corvette and high-powered Camaros will be something like a DOHC/DI/VVT 4.6 liter mostly aluminum mill producing 500+ hp and weighing 100 lbs less than the current engine. The cars themselves will be lighter as well. Expect better performance than we see today and EPA fuel economies around 20/30.

Don't lose any sleep over your salesperson's V8 perception of it's future.

Don't forget about the next gen small-block v8 from GM that will be direct injection.
