sounds like tire rub

when i reverse sounds like the rear tires are rubing. i was woundering anyone else hears this. only 2500 miles on the car. could it be the rear end? or the brakes draging can be heard not pressing the brakes in reverse, the car is stock so i know the tires are not rubing, any thoughts?

stock wheels? could be the parking brake cable rubbing the wheel. if it is your diff, you have problems

I hear the same in mine. Mostly in reverse when I turn the wheel. I thought it was a tire rub, but it sounds like its coming from the rear and nut the front.

I heard grinding from my car's rear end during backing and sharp turns. Took it to the dealer and they changed the fluid under warranty. The invoice says they had to do it twice to get rid of the noise. Service was done at 3,200 miles and no grinding since.

I have the same issue on my 2SS RS Stock Wheels but mine happens when making a sharp left/right going slow while leaving my apt complex, happens sometimes in reverse. Its not constant but consistent enough to be annoying. I want to take to the dealer ship but afraid i cant duplicate it when im there.

if you are turning than it is much more minor. the diff has alot of moving parts with the Limited Slip. and you couldnt replicate it because when the diff fluid warms up it works better. the drive to the dealer warmed it up. if your diff is grinding while backing up straight, you have an issue.

I just read some GM info and they have several issues around this. The fix used the most was the changing of the rear end fluid and putting in an additive. According to the posted info from GM, more often then not, that fixed the problem. Next stop, the dealer.

My Camaro does this going up inclines while turning as did my C6. On the C6 they had a TSB that said to change the fluid. In most cases it's just chatter from the differential and I'd rather have a tight diff than a over additived loose one.

Well, I won't be going 100 in reverse, so I'm thinking I might just let it go. For now. Unless it starts to get louder or happen more often. I agree with you Cody.

I'm gonna take to the dealer but I don't see how there could be a problem with fluid.

Get the fluid changed now, or the diff later. It's your choice.

It is the posi clutches. Had mine done twice and noise came back after about 3000 miles. Put AMSOIL gear oil in and their friction modifier and no more noise after 7000 miles. I am convinced the factory oil breaks down but no way to really prove it. Just know the AMSOIL fixed mine.

Mine only does it backing up with the wheels turned, when I am lining up to put the car in the barn, sounds like it is coming from the right front of the car. The fact that I am coming home means the diff oil is warm so I don't think my problem is that. I have looked at the right front tire, rim, suspension, and wheel well and found no signs of rubbing.

Actually there is a way to prove it. Get the used factory oil and send it to an aviation oil testing facility with the original oil manufacturers spec sheet. Talking to someone at your local airport can probably get you a location of a place to check the used oil. They check it for everything from metal shaving to viscosity loss and even water content. Wonderful service. Not sure of any car mechanics that utilize this service though. Mostly just aviation mechs.

I just changed my diff fluid. It was horrible and sounds just as you describe. The friction additive will break down so it's binding. Normally it will warm up and go away. Mine just got worse and worse, so just changed it with the GM rear diff fluid and GM friction additive. Voila, noise gone. Just shy of a qt of fluid and 3.5 oz of the additive.

I'm getting ready to change mine soon and put in Royal purple Max gear 75w-90 (I think that's the one). Mine isn't making noise but I just haven't heard anything good about the factory mud they put in the diff.

That's cool too. I was at the dealer with my wife's Cruze and thought about it. Just don't forget the friction additive! That'll keep the binding and noise from happening.

After you change it, drive a little bit and do some slow tight turns left and right. If you have the room, a series of figure 8s in both directions.

I had that grinding noise coming from the rear end of my old G30 van a bunch of years back (when it was new). My friend being a chevy mechanic right away knew that the rear needed to be drained and refilled with some sort of lubricant added to the oil. Never made a sound again.

I have this exact problem more than the reverse. The reverse is there, but not that noticeable. Since this is my first ever rear-wheel drive I thought that was the reason.

I took my car into the dealer and got the answer: "Car needs to move".

Best answer ever!
