Service airbag light after stereo install
I recently installed a complete stereo, started with making my own fark style harness, five channel amp and sub. No problems. Then I upgraded amp replaced stereo and all speakers, I used a metra kit. The air bag warning light came on. I tried unhooking battery all night, pulling air bag fuse, nothing. I changed to scosche kit, still same problem. I even put back stock radio same problem. The light has never came on before and it did it immediately after starting up with new stereo. I checked for codes and had Onstar check also, no codes or anything. I looked under seats and checked to see if passenger seat air bag light would come on( it comes on when you sit in assigner seat), everything appears normal. I am now charging battery, because I am sure it is low.
Anybody have any suggestions what it might be, because I am sure that the dealer will blame it on the radio or install. |

it may just be a coincidence. there is a recall item out there for the airbag light coming on and not being able to turn it off.
hope that is the case for you

That might be the case, I just want to make sure it's not something I did before I take it in.

Same thing happened to me after some stereo upgrades. I had to put the stock radio back in and take the car to the dealer and let them fix it. Turned out that my installer had tucked some wires and ended up having the airbag wires touching and although it was a minor thing it was enough to set off the service airbag light evertime I started the car. The dealer fixed it and I had my aftermarket headunit put back in and everythings fine now...

Do you know where the airbag wires are? I did rout some RCA cables under my dash on drivers side.

Also would this be something that re routing the cables would fix or am going to have to have some sort of reset performed. If a reset is needed is it something I can do. I really do
Not want to switch the stereo out again. |

I had this same issue happen to me when i was installing my Metra kit and it freaked me out. Do this Disconnect your battery cables re install your stock radio put it back the way it came out then re connect your battery and all should be normal. This is what I did and it worked out perfect. My issue is that when I was installing the metra kit the first time I didn't disconnect the battery cables and when I was done the light came on. The second time I did it I disconnected all power to the car and hooked up my new radio and Metra kit and did not have a issue. If it's still on after you do this then take it to dealer

The first time I installed the metra kit I unhooked battery but then had to hook it back up to get it out of park and forgot to unhook battery again. But last night I reinstalled factory stereo to a disconnected battery, and still got the warning with stock radio. Should I have left the battery connected during factory install then disconnect for aftermarket install? I am getting really tired of pulling dash apart, got impatient and ended up scratching up the console a little. :(

Disconnect the battery again and pull the airbag fuses and let it sit over night or for a few hours. Reinstall fuses and reconnect battery and see what happens

Just take it to the dealer and have them reset it and stop doing all this extra guess work. Just take it in and have them fix it and tell you why it happened so you know not to do whatever you did wrong again.

If I can't resolve it myself easily, I will take it in. I rather not have to install stock radio back unless necessary. Trying a few minor things like leaving fuses out or disconnecting battery overnight would be easier then taking off work to go to dealer. If all else fails and no one has an easy solution then I will take your advice DJ. Thanks to everyone for their continued help, this site is the best.

I unhooked both battery cables and charged battery all night still have warning. I have a tune so I will put it back to stock and take it to dealer next week unless someone else has any other recommendations.

I just have to put it back to stock before they monkey with the computer. Otherwise it could make things difficult for my SCT later.

Finally got around to taking my car to get serviced, they said I shorted out the main airbag module and it will be over $700 to fix. There not going to cover it because off aftermarket stereo. Now I wish I had swapped my stock stereo back. Not sure but I feel I might be getting ripped off, seems a little high.

Thanks for the info, I guess it would be the same for a ss vert, minus
some of the sensors and bags correct? Also it states replacement module has tobe programmed is that a gm only thing? |

I cannot speak to whether or not the unit needs to be programmed. I just did a quick search for the part to show you that the cost is far less than $700, and not very hard to (physically) swap out. I will PM you the documentation that I have, and you can read it yourself.

Thanks. I figured they were charging a premium, plus they said that the part was hard to find (ha). I would rather do it myself than get ripped off!

I would at least verify that is the module they are claiming to be bad. And armed with some of the knowledge we gathered in this thread, you can probably ask them to justify their $700 price. They might come down.

I hooked up led lights to the wires that run to the passenger airbag light on the over head Consle and a few days later my airbag light came on and I unhooked the wires and it was still on I was just coincident that my airbag sensor in my passenger seat got pinched at the same time i installed the led lights and had to get it replaced under warranty
