New Alternator for sub System??

Do I really need to get a new alternator or a alternator built on top of the one I have if i have a somewhat big system in my camaro??

I have 1 JL 12w7 with a Rockford Fosgate T1500.1db

An Audio store told me I have to have one if I have this system?

I have 1000 watts rms and don't have one. All stock and no light dimming.

You can always swap to the overdrive alt pulley to increase the stock alt's output at idle/low RPM's.

There have been quite a few alternator threads in the past few days. From what I have read on Camaro5, the stock alternator is rated at 150Amps.

A 1000W system would use 83.3Amps at 1000W. (1000W/12V=83.3Amps). Which means your amp alone has the capability of using more than half of the alternator's output. If you consider the alternator's output was designed without a 1000W amp in mind, that is pretty significant.

On the flip side, it's not likely that you're running your system at 1000W continuously. To do so, you would have to play some sort of sine wave at full volume, and you would probably be deaf. For the few moments that you actually hit 1000W, the battery is probably sufficient to keep the voltage from dipping.

The bottom line is that an alternator can only help, but it's probably not worth the cost of $500+, for most people. I personally have never seen any voltage fluctuations in my car, which has a 900W amp.

I have a sd 5k at 1 ohm putting out about 6500 watts at full tilt and 14.4 volts

I needed a higher output alt so i went with dc power 270 amp alt but then i also got 2 xs power d3100 batteries. So yes now i have over kill but when u are competing you want your voltage to stay as high as you can.

I have 3 class D amps with a total RMS output of around 2900w. It is too loud to listen to over half volume but still clean and has never caused the voltage meter to move. You would be fine with your setup.

Just a follow up: I did some non-scientific testing for a few minutes in my car. Instead of referencing the 4-pack gauge cluster, I brought my car's voltage up on the DIC.

I had been listening to my radio and driving for a while. When I first pulled up my voltage on the DIC, it indicated a steady 13.2V. I then turned my radio off and the voltage crept up to 13.7V, over a period of about 2 minutes. I then pulled into my garage, where the headlights came on and the voltage hit 13.5V for a second then steadied out at 13.6V.

I do not have an overly aggressive system (900W), and it does have a noticeable impact on the Camaro's charging system. I'm now curious to see where the voltage would steady out if I had given the car longer to fully charge the battery. I think it would steady out at 14.0V.

I really need to finish installing my ammeter. While installing my amps and speakers, I installed the current pickup near the battery on the 1/0 cable for the amps. I ran the wires to the dash and that's as far as I got. Maybe this weekend. I'd like to see how much current my system is drawing.
