I use to sell Vipers out of the country until Chrysler found out. Their reasoning was they would not honor the warranty out of the country which would cause. A major customer dissatisfaction Secondly it was an emissions / safety issue thirdly they told us there are different options in different countries such as lighting mirrors glass tint etc. They told us there were no exceptions, even to Canada That doesn't stop a private owner from selling you one to take to Canada, but good luck getting it through customs.

There was a 16 year old girl (I want to say she was Pakistani of descent but was born here in the good ol' U.S.) with her father at an Apple Store looking for an iPad. They're with one of the people that work there when she starts talking to her father in their native language. The guy that works there looks at them and asks "What language is that?" They say the name of the language and how they're Pakistani(?). The guy tells them that he cannot sell them the iPad, that it's corporate policy. They leave and email Apple support and they tell them it's because they don't sell to Pakistan and if the guy were to sell to them, they could fly over and use it over there for God knows what. But the email also read that they could just buy one off the internet. Wtf is wrong with companies nowadays?!

I mean it sounds like the Canadian side made it so you can't buy them here...not us. Sounds like the dealership is just following the policy someone in Canada set up. I could be wrong . Either way though...yeah that bs

Its not just Canadians. To the best of my knowledge, an individual cannot buy a new American car with the intent of exporting it -regardless of the brand or your nationality. It just so happens that it most commonly occurs with Canadians right now because the dollar is near parity and it doesn't cost much to get a car accross the border. Sending a car to Europe or Asia is a slightly harder task. Plus, we don't hear about their news stories regarding car importation -just as (I assume) they don't hear of ours.

I implore you to go to Google right now and compare Canadian prices to those of American prices on cars. Tell me if that is fair to you? Or simply price gauging. The average difference in prices is roughly 20-30% sometimes.

I could pick up an LS in the states for 19 k easy - brand new, while here I would be lucky ti get 26k.

It is easy to say something is more than fair when you are not the one being affected negatively or if something does not affect you in any manner.

He didn't say it was fair, he just said that it is.

Personally I think the idea of a warranty ending before 10 years is unfair. If you're going to spend 20k+ on a car, then I think that the manufacturer damn well be sure that it will last 10 years. Of course, bumper-to-bumper is only 3 years.

Again, not fair, but nothing we can do about it unfortunately.

I just bought a 2012 1LT/RS M6 about a month ago, wanted the 2LT but just couldn't swing it. Anyways, a friend that works for the American division of my company bought a 2012 2LT/RS 45th A6, we compared prices. He paid for his what I paid for mine. He was shocked and couldn't beleive it. Then I had to break it to him I had to pay 13% tax on top of that. All I can say is welcome to Canada, please check you wallet at the door.

I would say the big deal is paying roughly $5000-$6000 more for the same product simply because corporations know that they can gauge certain population cohorts. It is sad to see that people still think this way. Such a selfish attitude. I advise you to go learn some empathy for others.

Personally, I would be upset about it, but the rule is there for some reason... I seriously doubt it was to GOUGE Canadian consumers. There are trade agreements that are negotiated and signed by both and/or all countries involved... I would imagine that's where you need to research...

We have some of the same issues when it comes to buying a car out of state... I don't pay taxes there, but I dang sure have to when I get it back home if I desire to drive it...

Since it seems to be industry wide and not GM specific, I'm willing to bet it is something way beyond GM's control... but you appear mad at them as they were the messenger...

but they're not paying more because GM is screwing them. they're paying more because of the wonderful VAT taxes and such that the Canadian government uses to fund things like their "free" healthcare. I'm sure in Canada a car like a camaro is considered a luxury for that lucky 1% and accordingly taxed to the point of absurdity.

its not the taxes. the MSRP is thousands higher. also we pay nearly twice the amount for transportation. (for a car that is built here) the tax is added on top of the higher MSRP. Even you could get them to sell you the car, they will not honor the warranty. This is a common policy for all cars.

Actually it is not considered a luxury - in Canada in the part I live actually American cars are bastardized and considered a mechanical wreck and known for their problems...I may not think that way but so seems to be the general consensus. BMW, Audi, Lexus those are considered luxury here.

How can a car MADE in Canada, COST more here?? Our healthcare is relatively free - not perfect whatsoever - but it is free. Just recently a friend of mine went to the hospital with a broken arm, cost him nothing. I understand what you mean though that it is paid for by taxes etc. That part makes sense.

Your whole statement seems to be based on that "Camaro's cost more because we have taxes on them for health care". I am sorry, but it just isn't that way...

I am not blowing this out of proportion and speaking in some conspiracy engulfed way. I am speaking out for all your neighbors to the north. This is a common practice amongst GM and other automakers.

So far there has been no valid reason placed or stated why we pay 20-30% more for cars. It is not taxes or fees, as stated Camaro's are made in Canada, yet we pay significantly more for the transportation, and the MSRP is jacked up heavily.

That is a horrible solution. So when things go bad or are not fair you should just run from them or move away. That is not how you solve problems...problems are solved by speaking out. The squeaky wheels get the grease.

This has nothing to do with policy, it has everything to do with import and export laws.

Also something else to keep in mind, that dealer just saved you a hell of a headache. If you did purchase that vehicle, your government would not have allowed you to register the vehicle until your car reached a certain age. Imagine how pissed you would be if you spent that money, got it home, and then the Canadian government tells you that you can't drive it for two years.

You are allowed to register vehicles of any age in Canada, just cannot import from over seas unless it is 15 years or older.

The funny thing about this situation is...if you go to Oregon, or any states at that latitude they will sell it to you ASAP. If I were to go further to LA they would sell to me in a heart beat - as I would show up with cash in hand. As ended up the situation in the end.

This Bs agreement of no-sale to Canadians seems to be a border state policy only....
