Oil pressure issues

Just noticed that my oil pressure on my 4 gauge cluster is a 50 when I'm just driving regular. It shoots way up to maximum at 70 when I accelerate fast and when I stop it goes down to likr 20.

Is this an issue?

Who changed your oil last? Was it the proper grade?

I took it to a nice car wash called Auto spa. I told them to do the best/most expensive. It was like 3 months ago maybe?

My V6 does exactly the same thing. Is yours a V6?

And no it doesn't bother me. Things that would bother me would be excessively high or low at idle, or excessively low anytime.

50 at cruising 20 at idle is awesome, it's a tight little engine. Mine will peg the 70psi gauge when its cold and hardly getting on it. The 3.6 has a lot of moving parts, it requires one hell of an oil pump. They probably have the relief valve set pretty high.

I use Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic.

That's like a recipe for "help me empty my wallet." Go in informed. Tell whoever is working on your car exactly what you want, like "it needs 6 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 and a GM oil filter," etc.

It's not unusual to see very high oil pressure at cold start-up. As another poster said, the relief valve on the oil pump must be set for fairly high pressure. High oil pressure could cause leaks, but other than that, it probably wouldn't hurt anything.

It's not just at start up. It's whenever I accelerate. Not even when I accelerate hard. It's 100 degrees outside so the engine isn't cold and it happens even when I've been driving for 10+ min.

Have it checked. I'd first suspect the gauge. You could swap in another one to see if it reads differently. You could also find a way to temporarily rig up a mechanical gauge (the one you have now is electrical).

Is it leaking any oil? Probably not. That's why I suspect the gauge first.

The sending units for GM oil gauges are always suspect. I've had problems with them in GM cars dating back to the early 1990's. One of my first cars was a 1990 Lumina that would peg the oil pressure gauge on startup and then it would bounce all over the place depending on how I accelerated. Replaced the sending unit and it was fine.

It's normal for oil pressure to be high on startup when the engine is cold. The oil moves slower when it's cold, so the pressure is way up. When the oil reaches temperature, it's easier to move through the engine, so the pressure should drop way down at idle, and then you'll see it surge slightly as you accelerate, as the pump runs faster in check with RPM.

Oil pressure is nice to know. If it's reading funny, rely on your senses and info you can readily tell about the car.

1. Is any oil leaking?
2. Is the oil level, color, and smell okay on the dipstick?
3. Are there any warning lights about oil?
4. Does the engine sound ok?
5. Does the oil temp gauge read within spec when the engine is at operating temperature?

If all those items are fine, I'd definitely suspect the oil press sending unit...
