Strange increase in MPG

For the past couple days this week i experimented driving to or from work in Sport mode. First thing i noticed was how much better the car felt to drive. Wish it ran that way in regular D mode. I didnt feel i had to hit the gas as much to achieve the same acceleration. Anyhow, i noticed the times i drove in Sport mode my mileage increased 1-2mpg. I did this test more then once just to make sure. Like i said, maybe cause the car felt more efficient in that mode so i didnt have to mash the pedal as much.

Anyone else try comparing? Any known issues in using Sport mode on a continuous bases?

Haven't compared mpg numbers but I agree Sport Mode feels much more efficient at slower speeds and stop and go conditions. I'll be interested to hear some facts.

yes! If you drop your shifter in M you will notice on the heads up display or center readout an S appear for sport mode. If u decide to use the paddle shifters it will change to M for manual mode. Of course D is regular.

i switched back to D for the ride home today and i was 1.4 less then this morning in S. Similiar speeds, but not being on a course and having to deal with different traffic levels i dont think i can say 100%. I can say 100% S mode feels better.

How about some others trying and posting if u noticed a difference. I tried it 4 times now and each time the S was better mpg. Could be coincidence.

When i drive to work its city and hwy combo...speeds 30-70 over ~39 mile trip each way. I got 25mpg in S mode and have been avg 22-23.9 in D.

I should note, but wont admit to any speeds over the posted limit

I'm a little suspect as to the accuracy of basing mpgs simply on resetting the reading and driving 30 or 40 miles. I don't know how trustworthy that would be.

Not exactly...you could run your car in 4th gear instead of shifting to 5th and 6th at these speeds....I guarantee you will see an improvement in the feel of performance!....LOL. Just pulling your chain, MistyBlu.

However:
To make the diagnosis more plausible, I would reset the average speed indicator at each change in mode. That way, you can determine what the traffic density and your average speed for the trip might have had on the fuel mileage. If the mileage is identical both ways (assuming it is), you could also reset your lapse time calculator....now we're getting scientific evidence!

Good to know. Of course, I drive a manual, so I'm always in sport mode.

So this morning I played golf and my course is 22 miles from my home. It's a fairly flat ride consisting of around 16 miles of 65 mph zones and the rest 35-45 mph zones. Weather conditions were similar coming and going, with just a slight breeze on the return trip (maybe 10 mph). I used cruise control all the way, set on the exact speed limit. I also reset the mpg at the start of each run. The to and from were as identical as I could make them.

Results:
Home to Course, Sport Mode. 22 miles, 28.9 mpg
Course to Home, Auto Mode. 22 miles, 28.8 mpg

I will try the same thing on a longer jaunt soon and hopefully on a mostly city drive (I suspect that will show more difference).

I have not noticed an increase in MPG while in Sport Mode, but was very surprised to not see a drop. The low-end performance is much better (pull & shift wise). It also seems to hold shifts longer during WOL. I refuse to drive my RS V6 in anything other than Sport Mode.

I tried it again this morning using sport mode, and I have been getting an increase in mpg, about 4 to 5 mpg more than in the D mode.

I have noticed on mine that before running in drive mode it was running from 20 to 21 on the av, but now I have been seeing 25 to 26, but for now I am going to run the car in sport mode, and when I get to half a tank, I am going to top off as usual to see for sure, I never did trust what the car says, I go with how many miles to gallons I put in and get it that way.

Well of course, that is the most accurate way to measure MPGs, but since I'm retired... I'm too lazy to do that - I'll let the DIC approximate it.

My thought is; if highway driving, there shouldn't be much (if any) difference. If city driving, I can see where Sport Mode might actually be better in the MPG department.

There is a thread on increased MPG in sport mode for the 2010's.
Never tried it, maybe now is the time.
