Question about the 1LE paint scheme

Are the hood and spoiler actually painted, or vinyl decal?

I want one, bad, but I hate to say if it's a vinyl decal thatis going to be a very big possibility of a deal breaker, sure it's fine now, 15 years down the road when it starts shrinking and cracking however.....

even if they were painted.....having a flat/semi gloss hood puts off the enitre car off for me.....I've had a car with a hood like that before.....NEVER AGAIN.....and I would never buy a new car and have to have it painted right away. not gonna do it.

A deal breaker? Just remove it and/or rewrap it. What's the big deal?

So you expect the dealer to take the risk of damaging the paint before you buy it? On a almost $40k car? Your kidding right? I want to meet the dealer willing to risk that one... Lol

The dealer will probably do it but they won't be responsible for any damage it may cause to the paint. At least that's what I would expect from the dealer.

I myself don't care for the hood decals, especially the fender stripes.

I like the flat accent. But if it's just a huge sticker that's going to have to be instantly done right, why get it? I think it would actually be cheaper to paint it flat black than do a decal on the parts anyway for GM.

I remember reading one of the spec sheets on it and it said something like "hood wrap" which leads me to believe it is a vinyl wrap. If it is actually fully painted under that wrap is a different story.

There are no fender stripes. The hood is a wrap and the general consenus from things I've read on this forum is that it can be removed without damage to the hood paint. Some are hoping that a hood wrap delete option will be available. I'm keeping mine as it comes from the factory. The front splitter and rear SS spoiler are painted smoke grey.

Well that sucks, gonna have to reconsider the purchase, unless they do infact as you say, have a wrap delete option.

The 1LE does have stripes on the fenders. They come down from the hood and down the fender, just above the front wheel. Looks like hell. Or at least they did on the concept pics that I saw. Maybe they changed it?

Your gonna reconsider purchasing the car because it has a flat black hood? That car isn't made for its looks, it's made for the performance minded enthusiast. I myself don't like the hood either but I would still buy it and deal with that part later.

It has 0 more horsepower than a SS. I am a fan of the better suspension and trans, but I wont be road racing this thing, ever, so those are things I could live without and save a few thousand over with a 2SS.
If I'm going to be throwing 40 large at something, it better have everything I want within reason. Why double pay for a hood?

I'm kinda amazed at the number of guys on the forums complaining about the hood on the 1LE. It seems kinda... I dunno what word I'm looking for here. Just seems weird to me.

I like the hood, I like the contrast it has, I just want real paint, not a sticker. I mean it really seems more costly, and labor intensive to lay the decal on the hood, smooth it out, get rid of all the air bubbles, versus painting.

When it comes to a matte finish I would rather have the vinyl than the paint. You have to be very meticulous with matte finish, leave any bird poop or anything of that sort on it for any length of time and the paint will be damaged. At least with vinyl you can just have it removed/replaced every five years...

Yes,they changed it,the production 1LE's will NOT have fender stripes/hash marks, they sent a notice out saying that due to alignment issues they dropped them from production.

If all you want is an SS then buy one. Why is the 1LE even on your list of cars to look at?

You can delete the 45th stripes on a 45th, you can probably delete the black hood on a 1LE

I find a strictly cosmetic hood wrap on a new car to be quite pointless. They should at least have a wrap 'delete' option. I'd hate to think the hood underneath would be anything less than a fully painted one.

If I planned on tracking the car just a lil more than I do I would strongly considering saving and waiting for the 1LE. Considering also the closest track is Bristols Thunder valley at an 1 1/2 hour drive and the track prep/DA is always horrible... Not making my purchase completely track oriented. So i'l be going with a 2SS Not a fan of the solid black hood, do Like everything else ofcourse. I plan on buying a 2SS and making it my own! If the vinyl wrap is seriously seriously a deal breaker for you, you should have never considered the 1LE option because it is considered a performance pack for the track not a daily driving package. Which im sure plenty of members will buy a 1LE and daily enjoy the krap out of it! lol

This is the answer to your questions about the paint/decal parts.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...&highlight=1LE
It tells you everything in there about what parts are painted and what parts are decals or "wrapped". I believe that the hood was done in flat black to prevent sunglare during track events. But that's just my thoughts on the hood. I like the whole car honestly, just wish it had came out earlier.

It origionally was not intended to be cosmetic only. Just like Rally Stripes (flat black) a flat black hood was origionally done to cut glare and reflection of the sun distracting the driver while on the track. Rally stripes, now in glossy bright colors are more cosmetic. A flat black hood, although I am not a big fan myself, would still lend itself helpful to reducing glare/reflection, even while not at the track.
