you'd love the 427 LS7 motor in these camaro. they just dont stop pulling though the 7000 RPM red line

Easy to bump the LSA to 600HP for the ZL1
and drop an LS7 into the Z/28 and you'll love it. throw some bolt ons and a nice cam in it and put down 560-570 RWHP

My Z28 Formula:
  • 3,400-3,500 pounds
  • 500 crank hp
  • Small V8 or even a V6 with twin stage turbos
  • Strong fade free brakes with good fluid and reinforced brake lines
  • Light weight 18" wheels
  • Car styled for 18" wheels
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sports
  • Stiff bushings
  • Light understeer
  • Adjustable sways
  • No wheel hop
  • MRC OK, but not required. I'd probably rather upgrade to coil overs.
  • Track geared
  • Cloth Sport seats with side bolsters
  • Integrated roll bar
  • Coolers as needed
  • Brake ducting
  • Aero design with downforce
  • Air flow smoothed under the car
  • Cut outs for off road
  • Numbers on the doors

Okay, I might have to add a few of these things myself.

When I heard there was a Corvette running around with a small turboed V8 it got me to thinking. How perfect would that be for an ATS Camaro?

Your formula sounds great for a 6th gen ATS Camaro Z/28,just won't work for a 5th gen Camaro. For a 6th gen ATS Camaro Z/28, I would add that I want a small, high revving V8 engine, that would suit me better than a V6 TT.

I think there is somewhat of an agreement that gen 5 would likely have the LS7 and the gen 6 would have one of the new gen V engines.

Well especially now with the release of the 6th Gen in MY2016 versus MY15, I see it even more likely to get a Gen V engine in our camaros before the 5th gen is done being stamped

We can delete the sound deadening and other non essential trim i.e. bar bones or minimal console A Quartermaster SCCA T1 or T2 clutch is what 20 pounds lighter... If YOU change out the front seats 3,600 to 3,700 is
  • 500 crank hp
  • Small V8 or even a V6 with twin stage turbos
  • Strong fade free brakes with good fluid and reinforced brake lines
  • Light weight 18" wheels
  • Car styled for 18" wheels Bumper height / crash testing are a barrier to this as would be the sheetmetal changes. We're dreaming so why not?
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sports I am not sure why these tires get so much love with a 300 tread wear rating. PS2 with a special ultra sticky compound ie. the GY ZL1 proprietary tires. They are very good, just the wrong size.
  • Stiff bushings Stiffer rubber bushes have undesirable consequences. What we typically want is a more stable arm motion. With bonded to rubber steel ferules what we get is an increase in spring rate, a bounciness to the suspension. GM could use a few more sealed monoballs in the 5th Gen or call Pedders
  • Light understeer 1LE bars come close to this.
  • Adjustable sways Maybe they would do a front adjustable. The new Z style rear bar uses a droplink that is most effective straight up and down which limits adjustability.
  • No wheel hop The XL and XXL ZL1 shafts should do the job.
  • MRC OK, but not required. I'd probably rather upgrade to coil overs.

I have no doubt the new DI V8 is absolutely going to be turbocharged at some point and out of the box the NA version more fuel efficient and more powerful than the current LS3 A DI V8 Z/28 would be at least 4 or five years out. That is a long tome to wait.

The reviews I get from people that should know tell me the ATS is an awesome chassis. I also hear a few not so positive comments. We'll all know very soon how close the ATS is in terms of road manners from every auto rag out there.

I just can't see why some people say this engine would be 4-5 years out?? The trucks and/or the corvette will be sporting them this time next year!!

He said a new DI V8 Z28 would be 4-5 years out, not the engine itself.

Generally the roll out would have the DI V8 in NA form going to the new truck or Vette depending on which is first to market. The boosted and other higher output derivatives would follow. i.e. a single turbo, then a twin turbo or higher displacement, or... So say the new truck gets it first in 13. A year would roll by bringing the first turbo version out in 14. Say the new Camaro rolls out in 15 as an SS. The Z/28 or ZL1 rolls out a year later as a 16 or maybe 17.

About those stiff bushes, I was hoping for no step out. Is it possible to design the suspension to have compliant bushes that will only allow movement in the plane of the suspension travel?

Won't the ATS be comfortable with 18 inch wheels?

Thanks for the analysis of my dream Z28. It's just a dream.

I can wait for that dream, no hurry. I like my 5th Gen SS, so I will drive it for a while and have fun while I wait. Right now it probably would perform at about 95% of the proposed LS7 Z28. Maybe with some lightweight wheels it would be even closer.

A 5th gen Camaro cannot be the Z28 I dream of. Too big and too heavy. My dream Z28 is ATS sized. But I wonder if all that weight savings has created a less than rigid chassis. Looking forward to the full analysis.

Will you be Pedderizing the ATS? I suppose that higher HP turbo 4 manual will be the car to have.

Could a V6 turbo be V version power or better yet a DI V8?

Oh yes, the V. Forgot about that. Yea that's the one.

If it does get the DI V8 that might make waiting for a Z28 very hard for me. Especially if there is a 4 door version.
