'15 Red Rock Metallic 1SS-RS /1LE "The Story of SCAR1LET"

So it began back in mid July. I decided to step up from my '10 1LT-RS to the 1LE. Boy did i make the right decision.

After spending a day at the AutoClubSpeedWay in Fontana with my 1LT I made the decision then, this isn't going to cut it for me anymore. Don't get me wrong, she did a great job out there, was just as fast as most others with more HP in the corners, they were just able to pull away from me down the straights.

So after that day at the Track i came home and started to think what i really wanted. The ZL1 would be my first choice but to far from my budget, Z28 was just thinking about coming out to the public and price to high for me also. Heard everyone talking about the 1LE and how good it handled on the Track. So that is was what I started to research on.

Month or so passes and after tons of reading and research I decide the 1LE is for me. Now the big dilemma, talking the WIFE into getting it. She knows how much I love the Camaro and she should, I spent 4 years and approx 10k Modding the perfect Camaro I already own. In her words "What is wrong with the one you have already, my god you spend every spare moment on it and you want a different one". So over a couple day period and alot of bargaining between myself, her and my daughter i get the Go Ahead. What a difficult couple of days.

July 23rd was the day, the day i go in to Paradise Chevrolet and order her up. Have the list of all the options i want and spend the next hour or so placing the order. Thanks Becky. Now the wait, 10 LONG, LONG weeks before she arrives. No big deal i have a perfect Black Camaro already. I'll just wait it out in her. NOPE sell it the next day at a birthday party for my daughter. Just by chance my wife's cousin had been looking for a Camaro and was thinking about buying one. He went into the garage to get us a couple beers and comes back in the house and was like "Shit man that's a Bad Ass Camaro out there in the garage" I say jokingly "you want to buy it" not knowing he's been looking. He's like are you serious. I say yeup i just ordered a new one yesterday. Long story short he comes back later that week and buys it from me and loving it as much as i DID. Went to a good home.

So after 10 Long weeks of waiting I finally get the call she's at the dealer.

On the 26th of September I picked up "Scarlet" This is her story.

Beautiful color; Congrats. If I didn't have an SOM Camaro, I would've seriously considered this color.

The Rear Splash Guards were a OEM option. Cost was approx $200.

The color is unbelievable in person. One of the more rare colors built. I believe in '14 only approximately 190 1LE's in this color were built

So Scarlet's story begins in a bunch of these. Way before she even arrives.

Not much to look at until you open them up. And walla. Magic in a box

Reading and Reading on Camaro Forum's I find out how to make a great car even better then she is already. Questions and post from me and them i decide how i spend my FIRST 5k to improve her. Some performance and some beauty upgrade. She's no slouch out of the box but i know she can be better.

I have a vision in my head of how i want her to look. She's got to be different but still look like she did at first. So my first Mods start on Day 1. RotoFab Cold Air Intake in a Accent Yellow that will be throughout the Chassis. One of the most simple and common Mods someone could do. This one falls into both categories. Performance and Looks. For any of you thinking about putting on a CAI this is a simple mod, take approx 30mins and only a couple of basis tools.

Day 2 this is the big one. RideTech HQ Coil Over Suspension Upgrade. Some might think i'm crazy but i just think i'm a enthusiast. I know the 1LE is a Performance Package from the Factory but as mentioned before i want to go to the Track a half dozen time a year and want the ability to adjust how she response for that day on the track. These will allow me to do that to some extent.
So i ask for help, this is the first time i've done something this evolved on either of my Camaro's. So who steps up to the plate, my 17 yr old daughter, she's not like most girls you know at her age. I think she gets it from her dad. Car crazy too.

The next 14hrs we bust our asses and getting these baby's installed. Wasn't as bad as i thought they would be. Just took our time being Scarlet is only 2 days old at this point and don't want to scratch her this soon.

Your car is why I am at this forum. Well not your specific car, but it was a 1LE Red Rock Metallic car that got me to the "must have" stage. They look amazing!

But do have to ask, why is there a jack under the front right brake rotor in one of the photos above?

That was a pic during the Coil Over swap I just completed. Once the OEM strut is removed the Hub Assembly needs to be supported until the Coil Over is bolted in. I'll be posting videos tomorrow of that whole process. Trying to document everything on this car as I do the Mods.

It can help when lining things up to get a strut back in.

Day 2 Completed man that was alot of work but got her stance the way i wanted her to sit. The Coil Over adjustment took almost as long as putting them on. Nothing to hard but Wheels on, Check Height, Test Drive, Wheels back off, Adjust Springs, Wheels back on, Check Height, Test Drive, Wheels back off. over and over and over until it was just right.

Out of the box the Coil Overs dropped the car about 2'' in the Rear and about a 1 1/2'' in the Front. Little to much. On final adjustment a came to a 1" Rear Drop and Front was 1/2". Still left some of the back end up like the OEM sits but reduced the rear by 1/2''.

I was planning on changing the Rear Tire to the 305 like on the ZL1 and that would give me that 1/2'' back in the rear height. I know, I know the 1LE package is suppose to have the Square Set Up but to me the stretch rear tire just doesn't look right to me. IMO. Yes i will give up a couple tenths on the track but i'm not going Racing, I'm going out to have FUN at the track.

Here are the Videos i put together for any of you looking at changing out to Coil Overs. Process should be very similar for most Aftermarket Coils. I put these together to help out the DIYers like i am. Take Note i am NOT a professional mechanic but i can hold my own under a car also.

Makes total sense. Just that Murphy guy who has a law seems to hang with me like unwelcome family over a Holiday. Have learned to ask questions to avoid that.

Day 2 has come and gone. We moved on to Day 3. This is a day we swap out the OEM Brake Line to Stainless Steel Lines. After much discussion on the C5 forums I find that this is a more common Mod that guys are doing that Track their cars like i plan on doing myself. This one should be a easy task. For the most part it was until i change out the Brake Fluid to the Motul 600.

Yes this should have been easy also BUT operator error caused a big mess on this one. Not shown in the video below but when I pressurize my buddy's Brake Bleeder Pump i didn't realize i didn't have the cap to the Brake Reservoir tighten all the way and i spill about a pint of Motul 600 all over the place. All over the Engine Bay my Epoxy Garage floor, you name it, it had fluid on it. This shit means business too with what ever it gets on. SO lesson learned. Make sure your cap is on all the way.

Here is the Video i put together showing the Line Swap on Scarlet

http://youtu.be/remR4Ev5NRk

Why i was doing the brake line swap i also decided to separate the Clutch Fluid from the Brake Reservoir. This was a easy change also. This separates the Fluid from each other so when you are Tracking the car and your brake fluid gets hot it won't effect the Clutch causing Clutch Fade. Inexpensive Mod costing approx $120. I went with what JDP calls Stage 2. This changes out the OEM Brake Reservoir to an Automatic OEM Reservoir. The only differents between to 2 is the Automatic style hasn't be tapped for the Clutch Line. If i knew what i know now i would have went to the Stage 1 which is just a Clutch Reservoir added and plugged the tapped OEM Reservoir.

Note the None Tapped Clutch Line Connection on the Replaced Brake Reservoir

Finished up Day 3 with some other Small Cosmetic Mods. I got these Badges from Emblem Pros. Plan on a couple more of these down the road on another future project.

This Badge from Emblem Pro can be customized to how you what it to look. Lot of Color choices, they will even make custom badges for you if it can be made.

This pics shows removed OEM Badges. Used a fishing line to get behind the badge and cut through the double sided tape. As seen in the picture the tape and glue is left behind. I removed this by getting a paper towel wet with solvent and holding it on the glue for a few seconds to soften it up and just picked the glue off with my finger nail until it was all gone. Leaving tape i place there to protect paint while i was doing this also gave me a location for new Black Badges to go in-place.

Day 4 actually started way before Scarlet arrived. How to make her different but still have the OEM look of the 1LE. I decide to change ALL the black trim to a Dark Charcoal Grey Metallic. But I also love the way the Ground Effect Package on the ZL1 Camaro is. IMO i think that GM hit it out of the park with this look on the ZL1.

So long before Scarlet is delivered i order up the first parts of the Color Change. I purchased the ZL1 Side Rocker from Phastek. Great place to get parts from. Awesome prices and quick delivery. But wait the things don't come painted. No big deal i know how to handle that myself. But i what to take this to the next level and do some custom work on them. I track down a guy in Riverside that can make me some custom artwork stencils. I follow the look of the Badges i had Emblem Pros making me and forward him the artwork i designed.

Unmasking the template layers to reveal the outcome

The final product. This was very challenging to do. The Details and how small the Black outlined edge made it very difficult to overlay the template layers on each other. But for my first time doing this i think it came out great.

This is the OEM Rear Difusser from the ZL1. I changed this because the sides drop down approx another 1'' to match to the ZL1 Side Rockers. Gives it a more complete look. Most people wouldn't even notice the differences between the 2 but i would.

Scarlet's story continues for the next week finishing up all the painted items you see above. I repainted everything you see above 3 different times because i wasn't happy with the Gray. It looked great in the can, Dark, Metallic, but when i sprayed it on the parts it was just to light. So i tried it again after darkening it up more. NOPE. wasn't enough. Darken it more and i finally got it were i wanted it. You see those results above. Future Mods will be removing the vinyl hood wrap and painting the Custom Gray in its place. The Gray is a Satin finish so it kept that OEM look but with a different color.

Week one passes and most of my Pre-Purchase Mods are on except one. The Quantum Front Brake Duct Coolers. This will be my next major mod. I say this because i see alot of guys are having issues with installing them correctly. I'm going to try and resolve those issues with some different ideas. So keep a look out for a future post on those. It's going to be good.

Mods to date as follows:

RotoFab Cold Air Intake
RideTech HQ Coil Overs
Goodridge SS Brake Lines
Clutch Reservoir Separator
Brake Fluid Swap Motul 600
Skip Shift Eliminator
ZL1 Side Rockers
ZL1 Rear Difusser
Rear Tire Swap to 305/35/20
1LE Badges
Tinted Windows

Coming Mods:

Brake Duct Coolers (Pending Installation)
Custom Splitter Extensions (These will be For Sale once Development is Completed)
Track Set Tires and Wheel (Coming Soon)
Toe Hooks (Coming Soon)
High Flow Cats (Future Project)
Stereo Upgrades (Future Project)

Car looks great Kurt!

I enjoyed our run through Ortega Hwy last night.

I'm looking forward to you being the guinea pig on the brake coolers ducts.

Week 1 had come and gone. Went by pretty quick. Got most of the hard work past me and the bulk of the Paint changes i was trying to get done.

Week 2 pretty uneventful, will at least for me. Had to get back to the daily routine and make some money for more Mods. I did manage to get the Engine Bay completed. Painted some parts to make it pop when the hood is opened.

Took the OEM Strut Tower Brace off and Polished it out with a red Scotch Brite Pad and then added clear coat over it to protect it from getting weathered.

Engine cover took a little time. Two Tone with the Charcoal Grey from the Exterior parts i sprayed and a little bit of Yellow accents to show off the Chevy pride.

Here it is all completed and reassembly of everything. Tried to keep the Yellow to a minimum. I think alot of people get carried away with adding color to their car. You want some of the pop but there is a point were you need to stop. IMO. I think this is about the limit you want to go with it.

Went out to Car's & Coffee in Carlsbad, CA Saturday with some friends. Got alot of peoples comments and i think i did good. All were positive and gave me the props i needed to know i'm on the right track with Scarlet. Meet some other C5 members out at C&C and went on a cruise down PCH. Good time.

Want to through out a thanks to Skylane765 for hooking me up with some of his Tow Hooks and bringing out his Z28 for everyone to enjoy. Nice Set Up. Sounds like a Future post coming up for Week three.

Stay tuned for the Story of Scarlet.

Car looks great. Love the engine bay treatments.

But it is TOW !! Not TOE !!
(The latter sounds painful!)
