And another bit of news, NASA has had a change of heart. Originally, SCA 905, which ferried Endeavour and Discovery to their final homes, was meant to be flown to Dryden in California and retired.

However, NASA has decided to retire NASA 905 not at Dryden, but at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. That's right. Houston will now be the home to the famous leader of the SCA fleet.

SCA 905 did 386 flights as a NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, 66 of those with a Space Shuttle on it's back.

Here's a look into the history of NASA SCA 905.

Shortly after being acquired in 1974, NASA 905 took part in a trailing wake vortex study prior to being converted to its new role as a space shuttle carrier aircraft.

NASA 905's first mission as a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft was to serve as the launch platform for the space shuttle prototype Enterprise during the Approach and Landing Tests based at NASA Dryden on Edwards Air Force Base in 1977.

NASA 905 then began a life of ferrying Space Shuttles across the country.

NASA 905's final service for the space shuttle program was to ferry the shuttle Endeavour to Los Angeles for transfer to the California Science Center for permanent exhibit. The SCA-Endeavour combo flew over many Los Angeles landmarks on its final ferry mission, including the science center and the adjacent Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Endeavour is now on exhibit in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion, the white gabled building at left.

Not necessarily. My uncle was in the AF for a while and never flew.
