You need to remove the fresh air tube from the intake (OP did not do that), refer to the below thread, in particular post # 6:

Yes. cap the vent nipple on the back of the drivers side valve cover and cap the connection point on the intake. remove the long vent hose with the cannister looking thing.

Since the bracket is notched on one side, I think (therefore I am) that it was meant to bolt onto the pass side bolt of that thingy (tech term) although I doubt it matters now.

The catch can is in the right place with the right bracket, although yes that bracket could be use for the passenger side too.
