loss of warranty?
i'm just wondering what mods could cause a loss of warranty, i plan on putting an exhaust, air intake, wheels, hood, and maybe some ground effects. do any of these effect warranty?

The way I understand it is it depends on ur dealer. Some dont want u touching the car at all. Exhaust will void ur exhaust warranty and CAI could void an engine warranty IF they can prove it is as result of the CAI. Cosmetic mods shouldnt be an issue. Im considering a tune which will void my entire warranty....

Your dealership has to prove that the modification that you installed, actually caused the defect that you are trying to get warranty coverage for. As per the magnuson moss warranty act.

Although technically true, who do you think will run out of money first fighting that issue? If they find a non factory tune on your car, your done with the power train warranty. They don't have to prove anything else after that. You change the operating parameters of the vehicle, and that is all the proof they need.

Also the Act protects the use of OEM spec parts, and not aftermarket performance parts. In a nutshell the Act states that the type of warranty offered, must be written is a simple language and can not be changed after the fact.

..it won't void your warranty on your power window switch, or your seat belts, or your glove box.... Not trying to be a smart ass but it really depends on how mod friendly your dealer is. |

This. My dealer has let me mod the crap out of my car and kept my warranty intact. Others are not so forgiving. Results will vary by owner..

Ugh. I just ordered a K&N air intake filter. So that could potentially void my warranty? I have an extended 6 year warranty that cost about $1200.

I was told that by my local service guys that a dealer can void more than that because most CAI's use an oil based filter that can impact the engine, however if I utilize a CAI that utilizes a dry filter it would be no issue.

If you have an issue and need to take it into the dealer I would suggest temporarily removing the CAI and restoring the factory intake. Any other mod that you can remove, I would do it. They won't know the difference imo

I've found that if you deal with the same dealer all the time that you won't have a problem with a CAI or performance exhaust. It's superchargers, tuning the PCM, etc that void your warranty. My dealer has no problem with the mods that I've done to the SS.

Bring on the Supercharger

Mine's fine with the small mods I've done to my car: CAI and cat-back exhaust. It's a no-brainer that if I had an intake/MAF problem or exhaust issues that I'd be on the hook, since those components are no longer stock.
The other stuff? Psh. Cmon, they're cosmetic mods.

My advice is always the same, before you mod go ask your dealership if it will affect the warranty in any, shape, way or form!
The warranties on these cars are a God-send! I would recommend keeping them! |
