Back-up Camera mod possible?

I've seen a few vehicles that have the rear-view camera that projects into the rear view mirror. This is a very nice feature and one that would probably have some benefit for the Camaro. Anyone know how much one of these system would cost to have installed? Just curious.

Thanks.

im gonna take a stab at this, but your gonna have to get the camera and a screen, the mod shop is going to have to fab up some type of mount for the screen, and my suggestions would be to put the camera in the middle of, or right below the bowtie. All that would probably be somwhere between 1-2 thousand

Ummm dont think so. You'd need a monitor of some sort. Since there's no monitor that comes with Camaro from the factory, we're pretty much screwed. There's some aftermarket rear view mirrors with little monitors in them but they look pretty cheap.

Best way to do it would probably be to find a small inconspicuous place to mount a monitor, after that, you could choose from the plethora of aftermarket options for cameras. If you have a great idea for location of the monitor, please share!

You can get that kind of setup on the chevy Traverse. The dealer may be able to retro fit that system. The Traverse has On star so you'd still have access to it if they can make it work.

Just checked that out, that looks like a viable option, so long as the rear view mirror isnt massive, anyone live near a chevy dealer, care to take a measurement?

yeah there is all kinds of aftermarket stuff out there that come with every thing you need

as for monitor location i would order a new visor from the dealer and mount it in the visor that way no one can see it until you flip down the visor

I am pretty sure we will see this as an option on the Camaro in 2011. Perhaps there will be a chance to retrofit. I have seen the screen built into the rear view and the one I saw was pretty cool.

Not a camera but the manual talks about a feature with a series of lights for backing up. Anyone know if this is available?

Ha...sorry. I shouldn't drink and type.

Object Detection System or the Ultrasonic Parking Assistant.

It is on page 8-41 in the manual.

"The display is located in the center of the rear seat back filler panel trim and uses three color-coded lights to provide distance and system information."

Not as good as a camera but an option.

Navsgo GPS with Backup Camera

I am seriously considering the 5" screen Navsgo GO892RV
http://www.navsgo.com/GO892RV.html. I realize its not a Garmin, Tom Tom or other leading GPS unit but having a multi-function unit including the backup Camera sounds worthwhile and the price @ $299 isn't too bad an investment (one year equivalent of OnStar Directions & Connections renewal though you can negotiate a better price by saying you're canceling once the one year subscription is over).

I considered the 7" model GO760RV but when I cut out a paper template from the spec dimensions to see how big the unit would be against the Camaro dash it was huge. The 5" dimensions seemed a better fit and a nice compromise between the standard 4.3" and 7". Amazon does have a customer review of the 7" model http://www.amazon.com/Navsgo-building-speech-Bluetooth-transmitting/dp/B001L8RW9W o even though this unit is clearly Asian-built the quality and maps sound OK.

If I take the plunge I will update with pics of course.

I read that most people who are replacing them are losing some function of the buttons on their steering wheel. Are you going to have to remodel/cut out, etc the dash?

No mod/cut in dash planned - the unit weighs 7oz so I am hoping the bracket can attached to the A/C vents above the radio without any issues. I want to make it removable given the high theft issues with GPS units.

I don't want to use a on-dash bean-bag given our windshield visibility challenges but that's an option as well.

I've been doing a bit of research and people have been installing backup cam enabled mirrors from trucks and acadia's into other vehicles. This seems like a very viable option. I just got my Inferno Orange 2SS on Sunday and am going to try and make this mod considering the visibility is so terrible.

Has anyone tried this on a Camaro yet? Taken the mirror off and have photos of the plug's, wiring diagrams, any info at all will help.

Cheers,
LSJ

the typical system we do is a rear view mirror with build in navigation, Bluetooth and back up camera input.

we also disassemble the factory mirror and relocate the onstar buttons to the roof. all of this with install and parts runs a little less than 2K.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Gentex 356a Mirror. It is the non branded version of the OEM mirror in a bunch of GM vehicles, although it does specifically say that its harness is different than the Camaro's. The only power to the mirror is the OnStar buttons and auto-dim, correct? If so an adapter plug should be do-able. Then to feed the video input you could just get a wireless camera. It seems like it'd be a fairly simple process. Does anyone have a GM car with this type of mirror they could take some photo's of for me? Plugs, mount type, dimensions... anything like that?

Can you give me a few photos of how you mounted your camera? I'm trying to decide on the metra double din kit or really pursuing the new mirror idea.

Thanks!

I know you're asking about cameras, but shouldn't the 2010's ALL be wired for the backup sensors?? Wouldn't it then just be a matter of drilling the outer bumper cover and installing the kit?
