How they are saving money by trying to fix the tops is beyond me. Days of labor, leaks, shoddy work when all they would have to do is send out the complete assembly. Then unbolt the old one and install the new. Should take about 4 hours total. On my old car it took the guy 36 hours to do it. 3 12 hour days. That cannot be cheap. I think the labor billed was like $1200

I'm very thankful for all you guys have done!!! I don't post much, but I've been soaking it all in since I bought my left over 11 'vert back in March this year. Was planning on buying a coupe, but they made me an offer on the 'vert I couldn't refuse and have loved her ever since!!! Then I found camaro5 and learned I may have bought a huge can of worms.

So far I've been very, very lucky. I have a couple of minor wrinkles that are hardly noticeable (except by me) and 5-6 very small spots I'm keeping an eye on, none of them the typical V marks others have had, at least not so far, and none of which appear to be fraying.

I do have an intermittent rattle somewhere in the top mechanism over the driver's side that my dealer can't find, and they've gone fishing for 2 times so far. I noticed it after they did the top TSB back in April. Taking it back this Friday to have the regulator replaced in rear passenger window and they're going to go fishing again for the rattle. My dealer's been great in working with me on this! Third time's the charm, I hope!

Again, thank you for all the information you've made available, because had I encountered these problems myself, being a 1st time 'vert owner, I would have had no clue how to handle this!

Thumbs down Update

Just off the phone with service manager.

"I'd like to know the status of the repair to car?" He says, "I was just off the phone with the trim shop and they are having trouble figuring it out."

I do appreciate his honesty but needless to say I am not very happy. This is now day 8 for a repair of a new top replacement that took 3 days.

The upside is that this Malibu only cost me 20 bucks in gas last week the Camaro would have been about 50.

Now I am being told that the car is being returned to the dealership. This is day 10. The issue is that although the drain tubes are positioned properly the water continues to make its way into the car. I suggested a new bag which I understands comes with longer tubes.

This new top sits lower in the well. And seems to fold up far more compact. So we'll see what the dealership's techs can do. Needless to say i am not too happy. If a design has a trim shop, that has been in business for over 50 years, stumped how good can that design really be?

Keep us informed. So far (where's that frick'n smiley with fingers crossed) I haven't had the water issues, but still can't get the top moulding to stay in. IF you get a chance, ask them how this was done on yours. Good luck.

Discouraged... no fix and no communicated plan of action. I am regrettably escalating on Monday morning (day 15). The sticker on my car was 49500, surely after five failed attempts some sort of comprehensive approach should be taken. Funny thing I just received a GM survey... titled. "Standards for Excellence "

Unhappy Just off the phone.

Service manager: "water is making its way into the car without hitting the bag at all." I have no idea what this means.
So the service manager and the lead tech both with Zero Camaro Convertible Top Experience with fumble around with my car "all day" tomorrow till they figure something out. The man with decades of trim experience who installed the top (looks and fits perfect) is not getting sucked into the water management issue.

So this is the plan? :(

And why hasn't Brandon made his way back into this thread?

I wonder why dealers won't send someone to be trained on these tops. I would rather have a GM certified trained Convertible expert work on them than Joe Blow from XXX Top Shop...Seems like it would also end up being more cost effective in the long run.

Seems like us Joe Blows are educating GM and the Chevy dealerships one dumbass at a time. If it makes sense, don't do it. Corporate America at its finest. And before I get slammed for this, I have worked in a Fortune 250 company from 89-08 and in a Fortune 10 company 08-present.

Guys thanks... but answers... does anyone have experience that can help me get this fixed. This thread was started to share top replacement experience. We all know that GM can do a better job from the top down... but that discussion is best left for a different thread. Which I am working on.

I am grateful to all the members here who have shared their experience gained with resolving these issues.

Serious now. If it isn't the bag, have them pull the back seat and all the trim out then soak it with water. I would have someone inside to see where it enters. One of the seams in the side of the car probably wasn't sealed right at the factory and hence the leak. I have seen a few cases here and in the Facebook group for this very reason.

Thanks. They say they have tried that... and the leak corresponds with the new top. I have been told that the water drains out the tubes and somehow seems to wick into the car. They say it looks like it is coming from the rear seat area behind the driver's side.

I am going to go there tomorrow... maybe a new set of eyes.

Can the seams that leak be sealed with the bag in place?

I think Brenda had it on her first car. The seams are below the bag but I think the bag may have to come out to be fixed correctly. I would see if you can get in and take a look as you are right. Another set of eyes may just be the key

Good news. The service manager has discovered that the drain tub has a split. Explains how they would see water draining out the tube as designed but water wicking into the car. New bag ordered , they are also going to replace the carpet. Stay tuned for the next adventure. The new bag install.

Owning one of these verts has taken much more than just a capital investment. I think us vert owners ought to stop listing our mods in our signatures and list our repairs instead.

GM really should have about 3 expert Convertible Technicians trained and certified by GM to roam the country, going to dealerships where and when needed. It is not uncommon for specialty machine makers to have such technicians available for travel and they do it all the time to cover both warranty and out of warranty service. Sometimes you have to wait a week as their schedules can be booked, but it beats the present system.

I really get worried about the top failing after warranty.

Day 24. Waiting on new carpet.. so I am being told. Looks like this will be the fourth weekend without the car. Remember it took three days to replace the top and now in week four of dealing with the consequences of the top replacement.

Owning a new Camaro Vert for me is a lot like owning a used car... unreliable and always in the shop.

AC Compressor Overheat - 1day
Grind in Reverse - 1day
Squeaking Brakes - 2 days (not resolved)
Dealer Installed Wheels not Balanced Properly -2 days
Window Regulator Replaced -2 day
Brake Master Cylinder Caps Leaks
Top TSB First One - 1 day
Top TSB ( Wind Noise) -1 day
Top TSB Second One (work JUST pencil whipped never performed) -1 day
Top TSB Third One (Top Replace) - 3 days
New Top install leaks water - four weeks and counting

I'm sure I am missing a few things...

Angry Where would you store a leaking topped Camaro?

Well my dealership thinks outside is a good idea... did I mention we have had flood producing thunderstorms ALL month. Photos to follow.

I wonder what standing water inside of a car in 90+ degree summer heat for three weeks does... surely 100 percent humidity inside the car for this length of time can not be good.
