Ported TB install help/ something's wrong

Just installed my ported throttle body and when I went to start up my car it sputtered and I got a CEL and a reduced engine power appeared on my DIC. I rechecked everything but idk. Any ideas.

Did you disconnect the battery? If not, try that.

I got a cel with my TB install and disconnected the negative in the trunk for about 15 min. and cel went away.

With that being said, make sure the plug is connected to the TB, those are some really picky connectors. A month ago I took my TB off along with IM to inspect my gaskets and when I put everything back together I got a CEL. Everything looked OK when I inspected it, I unplugged the TB connector clearned it out with MAF cleaner and that fixed it.

I re-installed the stock one and that works fine, but when I install the ported one that's when the problems happen.

I had this happen over the weekend, here is what I was doing:

I wanted to replace the 4 center bolts on the intake manifold, so I took the whole thing off, which requires unplugging the TB sensor wire. Hell I didn't even disconnect the battery (Yes, I am one of those knuckleheads)

Put it all back together and I was expecting a CEL. Well I got that and the sputtering and the message saying "Reduced engine power" I let it run for another 10-15 secs for it to calm down from the cold start, but it still sputtered, so I turned the car off, waited about 30 secs and started her up again and she came on like nothing had happened.

The CEL stuck around for about 8-10 more miles, the code was for the throttle position sensor being off, no biggie. After the 8-10 miles the CEL went away.

My suggestion, install the ported TB, make sure the sensor wire is plugged back in, start her up, I am sure the CEL and the sputtering will happen. Let her run a bit, about 15-30 secs. Turn her off, start her up again and see if she starts normal. If she does take her for a nice long drive with the wife/girlfriend. By the time you guys come back home, the CEL will probably be gone.

Well after starting her up and waiting she just shakes like crazy so turned it off and back on and it continues to shake. I just finished leaving the battery disconnected. Could there be something wrong with the tb? Wish I had a way to figure out what the codes are.

Correct, the new one may be in a slightly different position.

Also I noticed you painted the TB, were you extra careful with the overspray?

I had it sent to Rx for them to paint it.

If you just got it you can ask VMax to replace it... Maybe FedEx or UPS damage the TB...
My 2 cents...

Agreed, but before you do that, preform the steps above.

I got the same code when I pulled it off to work on the IM. I just removed it and cleaned the sensor. However between the time of taking it off and putting it back on I probably did somewhere close to the same procedures for the throttle/idle learn reset.

Take a ride to a local auto parts store (with the good TB on) and by a cheap scanner, you can get one for about $45. I have one, always good to have.

I point that out because i see other threads with bad TB, and i think they check it before shipping it...

Yea....try the relearn procedures next. It's a pretty easy step by step process.

Note the last step of that relearn procedure, sometimes when you don't clear the code, it will keep kicking the resulting side effects, in your case the reduced engine power.

I would install the stock TB, buy a scan too, that clears codes as well and get to work.

Or

Just take the car to autozone/pep boys/oreilly install the ported TB right there in the parking lot, see if you get the CEL and the reduced power side effect and have the tech there check the code and clear it.

I disconnect the battery to clear them but they come back, and go away when I install the stock, I'm doing the relearn this now and if that doesn't work I'm gonna try to find a way to figure out what the codes are.....
