How often do you change your oil?

Having never owned a car with an oil life guage, I'm new to the whole not changing the oil after x amount of miles. Reading the manual it said the car could go a year or more without having the oil changed, though you should change it and the filter every year.

So do I change my oil per the norm or listen to my oil life guage?

What say ye?

You will hear a multitude of opinions on this. I say just follow the owner's manual.

I did the first oil change around 1500 miles and the second change was about 4500. Now I do changes every 5000-6000 miles. Is it a waste of money to do changes at less than 6000? General consensus says yes....

if you follow the oil life monitor you'll be fine. just be sure to change it at least once a year.

These GM oil life monitors are a terrible thing to follow. I change my oil at 5000 (or less, since I wont even drive that in a year). The oil life monitor had me at over 80% oil life at 5000, two changes ago. Sorry, I'l follow the mileage instead.

1st oil change was at 1587K miles, 2nd one at 5721K miles. Now it will be every 5 to 5.5K. Mobil 1 5W-30, ACDelco PF48. Just my peace of mind.

mine works just fine. I'm at about 60% with 3200 miles. should need changing right about 6k which is just about right for a synthetic blend.

After the first 1,500 miles, right before winter storage, and once half way through the driving season. This is my 3rd season with the car.

That works out to about a 6,000 to 8,000 mile interval, at which point I have around 50% of oil life left.

Mobil 1.

Did 1st at 1500' 2nd at 3000 and now 3rd at 6k. Next at 10k and then every 5k after.
These things drink oil so please make sure you check every 1k on the stick. Some peeps seem to think the oil monitor is for how full. It's not!

Follow the oil life monitor. Thats the reason the 100's of engineers from GM put it there, as not to waste oil changing oil every 3K since thats what dad did. besides, you have 100K warranty on powertrain.

Agreed, checking the oil level is even more important, in regards to keeping the proper amt of oil. Most people here are using Mobil 1 and if you are +/- 1k miles, no big whoop, but down 1-2 qts, big whoop.

For holding 8qts of oil (V8), the oil filter sure seems a tad small. But then again, I am thrilled there aren't two filters like some Porsche products.
