Borla ATAK vs Borla S-Type

Which ones does everyone prefer if they had to choose? Also what is the advantage/disadvantage of going with a cat back vs an axle back? I don't know a whole lot about exhaust so thats why I'm asking. I have an automatic 2010 2ss if that matters? I'm open to other exhaust systems as well I just like the sound of those too from what I have heard and I have read its a good brand. It gives it a deeper muscle sound than stock.

S-Type: deeper tone and quieter than ATAK. Small amount of drone with cat back.

ATAK: louder and raspier than S-type. I've never experienced drone.

As to whether you should do an axle back or cat back, that depends on what you have planned for your car. Oh, and hello from the other side of the river. Feel free to hit us up if you have any questions.

Atak is great without headers, too loud if you get headers. S-type is pretty quiet without headers, but perfect with headers. I prefer the catback..no cutting the stock exhaust, and the X-pipe makes the systems sound like the videos.

I have the atak with stock headers and love it. I will be installing the borla LT headers soon and still keep my atak exhaust. Going to go loud =P I will see if the drone is unbearable or not :P

It's not so much that the Atak is too loud with headers..it is that it is not designed for headers. When you watch Borla's video, they explain how in the Atak, they design each of the multicores with different patterns for each car. When they design these exhausts, they use a stock car with stock manifolds and cats..and the mufflers are basically "tuned" for that setup.

Your car has 4 cats from the factory. When you add headers, and replace those with two high flow cats (or none at all), it creates an untuned sound, which to me is more random noise than muscle car. I had the S-type on my car, and when the Atak came out, I switched..for 3 days. It was just two obnoxious and strange sounding, so I switched back.

The S-type is a straight through, tried, and true bullet muffler, and it seems to just work better with headers.

S Type will induce a ton of drone with headers FYI.

I have the ATAK with ARH Lt's. I would have to disagree with what has been said about them above. I absolutely love the sound. I honestly think it isn't as loud as others said and not obnoxious to me.
These are videos of me and my buddy. Both running headers, hf cats and ATAK

This is mine with 1 3/4 LT headers, high flo cats, and Summit x-pipe. I love the sound of the ATAK's on mine!

honestly its hard to make a v8 camaro sound bad. to me atak with headers sounds to raspy. but still a good sound if that makes sense. still sounds better than most imports. but i would go S-type with headers. nice clean deep sound.

My car does not drone untill about 80mph with the S-type. If you are getting a lot of drone, it is likely the cam.

I have the S-Type and LT. I have drone at about 1800-2200 RPM. So as long as I stay out of that range I'm good. Unfortunately that's my normal cruising range on the highway.

+1 on S-type

On my M6 without headers the drone didn't start until 75 MPH. With Kooks installed it starts at about 70 MPH. I wouldn't call it a ton, but it's noticeable.

The other problem with drone is everyone seems to have different ideas of what it is. I have had people say exhausts drone that I know do not, and vice versa. It seems to be open to interpretation.

is the Borla S-Type going to give me good a performance boost? I plan on possibly adding headers later on. I was looking at the Flowmaster American Thunder catback but I read somewhere if your going for more power to stay away from Flowmaster

No catback is gonna be more than 5-10 HP. Borla will be on the highend because of their straight through design. Flowmaster on the other hand is a friction/chambered design..which will perform the same, or worse than stock. I would do a Borla Axleback before a Flowmaster catback if price is an issue.

There is also the difference in materials. Flowmaster is 409 stainless, which is a lower grade and can rust. Borla is 304, which is the highest exhaust grade and does not rust.

as said before.... if you ever plan on headers, go S type. If you don't plan on going further than intake and exhaust than do ATAK.

ATAK with headers sounds far too raspy for me, but it is all relative. However, you will probably think the S type is quite until you do the headers but it will be a drastic improvement in tone from stock either way..
