Great mod for sure! Ill be doing it when (if) I ever get a Camaro because Im 6'6 and I need all the windshield I can get.
i went to the dealer today... didnt find anything good. if the mirror was smaller the mounts or plugs wouldnt work...

i did find that the camaro mirror is every bit as big as the pickup trucks and SUV's...

oh well.

What's next? Perhaps a muffler fix that involves a coat hanger and some duct tape?
Nope, baling wire is the only true fix for that.

Personally, if I find issue with it, I would look for a cleaner fix than leaving exposed wires and an upside down mirror that I have to look at every time I drive...a constant reminder that I was too lazy to do it right....
I cant see the wire from where i sit... but it DOES remind me that maybe "someone" was too lazy to do it right in the first place.

Looking at your pics...and combined with your 'I don't use OnStar'...it would have easy enough to disconnect the mirror, tuck the connector back up into the headliner, order/find a 'non-OnStar' mirror and snap it into the stalk, replace the wire guide and voila...clean and effective. I wondering who'll be the first to properly relocate the OnStar buttons to the headliner panel....
I dont remember saying i dont use onstar but that i just have not yet... but sometimes i forget stuff.

and one last thing...your pic are taken from a slightly different perspective that obviously exaggerates your point... Notice in your first picture we see NO steering wheel...second picture we see plenty of steering wheel. I'm not suggesting the visibility is not an issue...but you're being pretty righteous in your 'position' and your quest to defend it.
two pix on different days, no tripod in my car... sorry!
i wasnt trying to mislead anyone. sorry if you got that impression, and sorry if anyone was indeed mislead.
also, i'm not really defending... im just mystified at how many folks want to tell me how wrong i am when i am just asking for help.
FACT: the mirror is FREAKIN HUGE in comparison to the windshield height.
Windshield=10" vertical
mirror= 3 7/8" (that's almost 4") vertical
that means that the mirror is 38+% the size of the vertical windshield...
it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

Great idea, thanks for sharing this. When I drove one, that's the first thing I noticed on the road, the girth of the rearview mirror. Blindspots were not an issue for me (I'm used to the sail panels), it was the mirror.

rolnslo, THANKS! i owe you one

Thanks so much for the re-suggestion to flip the mirror… when I had looked at it before it appeared to be a no gain but after removing the plastic wiring cover AND unhooking the wire connector from the windshield and moving it to one side, I was able to flip the mirror and tuck the onstar buttons up behind the headliner!
I just could not see the forest for the mirror (trees). I started this thread in hopes of help and I got it! (after several bruises) Thanks!

I'm estimating that this gives another inch of visibility! (which is a big percentage)
I will have pix posted tonight (need a flash).
I would still like to see a thinner mirror but this is a great improvement while I hunt!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
another update: i was wrong it only gives you 7/8" more.
when measuring from the console (from the same exact spot on the console both times) and with no cameras involved the "flipped" mirror gives me 7/8" more viewing pleasure (vertically).
that is an 8.75% improvement measured vertically (i understand that nobody actually looks at a right angle to the windshield but it was the only way to measure without bias)

is this horse dead yet.... or shall we beat it some more?

thanks again to all that provided positive input.

everyone else, thanks for the laughs!

Mods, please do not merge this for it is a sincere plea that needs to stand on its own.

I need a solution to this 2SS REARVIEW MIRROR HAZARD.

edit: sorry if i wasnt clear earlier, i was a little jazzed...

MIRROR = BLIND SPOT when moving forward.

Just when I thought I had gotten used to it, I ALMOST T-boned a Prius this morning.
I would have already yanked it out of the car but I am not sure what that will do to onstar, bluetooth, and whatever other sensors may be hiding in it.

Pulled up to STOP, checked right, checked left, checked right again as I started easing into the intersection then BAM! There it was.
That darn Prius just popped out from behind that mirror like the Starship Enterprise coming out of warp… scared the KR@P outta me!

I'm goin to a dealer this weekend to try and play mix-n-match but if someone has a real solution or even a serious idea please help.

GM, if you are listening, please address this issue for ALL Camaros… now. Hey, I said Please!
Great stuff, thanks guys!

Most of you wouldn't understand.
I have the same problem in some cars, at some intersections.
The car coming from the right can hide behind the mirror.

It's become habit for me now to duck a bit and look behind the mirror.

LDGn63,
I have an alternate solution for you. Look at an early sixties (or late fifties) Corvette convertible and you will see the rearview mirror mounted on the dashboard. Since you have a tall vantage point, you will easily see over the mirror when driving. What do you think?

Not only did it help you but it could save a life, maybe yours.

I do have to say though that I drove a 2LT yesterday and didn't even notice it as an issue. I'm 5' 10". Maybe that's why. I did get the tank turret feeling but that just went away after less than a block down the road.

I was thinking about doing this as well. Once mine arrives I'm going to see if it's feasible, but from what I remember about sitting in one, I don't think it will be of much functional use. But if it works, it would be very cool, and give a person an ENTIRE windshield to look out of (once you get rid of all that black stuff too).

Has anyone considered this solution: Gentex GM - Cadillac OnStar Replacement Mirror w/3.5" TFT LCD Monitor? http://www.mobilevideo4less.com/Merc...t_Code=GENK356.
Yes pricey @ $549.00 but also includes capability for back-up camera which has been another thread topic - adding the camera appears to run $200+ depending on model. I've been considering adding a back-up camera / GPS systems from Navsgo http://www.navsgo.com/GO892RV.html but perhaps this mirror solution will kill two birds with one pricey stone...

I've emailed the vendor with questions on this option and other On-Star equipped mirror replacements - I'll post their response.

Here's a link to an eBay seller of Gentex mirrors without the back-up camera.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GENTE...QQcmdZViewItem.

Not trying to beat the dead horse - just seeking alternatives...

LDGn,

Kudos for your inginuity and persistence. I can't tell from the pictures and haven't read the thread fully. Were you able to re-install or replace the cover for the onstar wiring? I can handle upside down buttons; but exposed wiring, even if i can't see it from where I sit, would bug the crap out of me.

Man those buttons really do make a difference... wonder if it would be possible to replace the rear-view mirror with a normal one, and somehow move the onstar buttons to the headliner 'console'... A project for someone else I suppose.

Once I flipped it I was happy. It just looksmore natural without those big freakin buttons hanging down.
Still passively looking for a better solution. Thanks for the leads.
I'm sure a cover can be fabbed.

Its really not the buttons. Its the shape of the bottom of the mirror. It doesnt need to be all curvy and crap. Just the standard GM mirror would of been perfect.
