ZL1 vs challenger srt 392 hemi

Hey all ..who would win if these 2 cars had a drag race bone stock 6 speeds. I belong to a challenger forum also.
And some of them claim the srt is just as fast

The SS and SRT8 is close, the ZL1 will destroy both.

The SRT8 with the 392 will eat an SS that is bone stock, but will see nothing but taillights on a ZL1, even with a bad driver. The dog is heavier and has over 120 fewer hp than the ZL1.

SRT automatics are running as quick as 12.2, do your own math............... Seems the quickest manual is around 12.4, but not sure on the manual. the 392s are definatly EASY 12 second cars, the SSes are more 13 second cars, the ZL1s are runningsame as SRTs and slower in a LOT of cases.

Ya and allot of cases not all 392s are running 12.2-4s so lets get real! 392s around here are running 12.8s 12.7s the Zl1 is the faster car but anything can happen with bad driving.

Until the Challenger comes in a convertible model which will likely be never, they can suck balls. JMO. And yes, I'm trolln'.

As stated earlier, driver could make a major difference. So I'd say it's a statistical tie within the margin of error.

WTF does having a convertible available have to do with anything? Both the Camaro and Mustang have went though long periods where there was no convertible available. I used to love T-tops, so i think the Camaro Sucks balls until they bring that option back, well not really, but as a kid who grew up in the 80s I miss T-Tops hahaha.

Anywho, i digress, and I agree, driver's race in the 1/4 mile and no idea what will happen next year when the SRT gets launch control and if it ever gets the 8 speed auto. Or the upcomcoming supercharged 6.2 hemi, of course alot if this is probably next gen or Cuda territory, who knows haha

If you are talking 6-speed only vehicle, the ZL1 should get the win, although with some of the times I have seen posted that also could be a drivers race. If we are talking a 392 automatic car, it would be a great race but my money is on the 392.

Well in all actuality the auto is a 6-speed too, so exactly what are you saying? Both 6-speed auto and manual ZL1's would take an SRT8. More power and less weight, do the math. Theres none of this depends on the driver that I read on here before. People aren't comparing drivers so were assuming a professional or even a robot is driving the cars. Its a question of which "car" would win. Newmoon, would your money being on the SRT8 have anything to do with you having one? lol

LOL, i was just bored and well, yes, i saw the trollin, and ignored it, because I apparently wanted to wax lyrical about T-Tops.

The problem is, the Challenger can apparently bend physics because MULTIPLE autos have run 12.2s and most ZL1s, well, even the BEST mag time is around a 12.1, with alot being in the mid 12s. FYI, even the crappy drivers at Edmunds got a 12.4 from an auto SRT8 392. yes, we are talking about 6 speed 392s, but from what ZL1s are running, as said, even that is a driver's race. To hell with Physics and robots in this case, these actual times, even what the pros are running, says it is a driver's race. Also, you realize the ZL1 is just as Heavy as the SRT8 right?

second race:

driver seems to have some serious issues getting the car to hook up, lots of wheel spin from a dig..

here is another, same issue, the Camaro can't hook up for $hit:

The fastest stock SS ran 12.5, only 3/10s slower than the SRT8. Once winter comes then you cam expect to see some low ZL1 times. It is the middle of summer so dont expect anything crazy until it cools down. The best ZL1 time is have seen is 12.05 in 79 degree heat, the best SS time was 55 at the time of the run, the SRT8 ram in Nov. Put both cars on the track on the same day and the ZL1 will walk the 392. The only advantage the 392 might have in summer is the ZL1 has heat soak issues.

And not sure why this isnt obvious but it could be the ZL1 driver cant hook because he isnt a good driver. It takes skill to launch 580hp. My above comments are based on equal drivers.

Yes,
In those races there were traction issues, but all but 1 was 13$ and why never and mph better than 111? We are talking mid 12s runs and from the ones I have seen traction was not an issue. Also both view had challengers, the first was an Rt and the second was an older modified 6.1 SRT, not a 392. Don't think that was the point though.......

First it still questionable to even call the 12.5 SS sutock, second most of the low 12 392 times were during this summer heat too. Yes, the ZL1 SHOULD be faster than it is, but it isn't not, and not all the runs were in the summer heat at bad tracks. Also theSRTs get kau ch control for the 13 MODELS, should make it even more interesting.

In the blistering middle of summer heat a member dadstoy brought his auto 392 challenger to royal purple raceway in Texas to run me. I only saw him run once but he ran a 12.8 @ some higher trap than mine. My SS, a similar modded SS, and several other SS and 5.0 owners I did not know where running mid 13's that day and I mean mid 13's. The 392's seem to weather the heat well, and he was stock with a cai and no tune. I imagine they'll love winter even better.

Credit where credits due, like another member said, they seem to bend physics. He had run a 12.2 prior to coming to Texas in that thing with just a cai and street tires

I know nothing about the SRT8 emgineering but i am willing to bet they have nice gearing and the autos obviuously have sick OEM torque converters. It also appears the stock tune doesnt pull timing with the slightest hint of heat like our cars do.

392 Manual Gearing:
Gear Ratios
1st 2.97
2nd 2.10
3rd 1.46
4th 1.00
5th 0.74
6th 0.50
Reverse 2.90

Final Drive Ratio 3.91 – Getrag limited-slip differential

392 Auto Gearing:
Gear Ratios
1st 3.59
2nd 2.19
3rd 1.41
4th 1.00
5th 0.83
Reverse 3.16
Final Drive Ratio 3.06 – Getrag limited-slip differential

Overall Top Gear 2.54

ZL-1 Manual Gearing:
Gear ratios (:1):
First: 2.66
Second: 1.78
Third: 1.30
Fourth: 1.00
Fifth: 0.80
Sixth: 0.63
Reverse: 2.90

Final drive ratio: 3.73

I believe the factory Torque Converter has a 2400rpm stall rate.

as for timing, yeah heat soak is a big issue on the Chryslers and they retard timing similar to the Camaros.

If I had a ZL1, I wouldn't waste my gas on an SRT8. They are not close in performance.

Challenger SRT8:
C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 4.5 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 10.2 sec
Zero to 150 mph: 24.7 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 12.9 sec @ 114 mph
Top speed (drag limited, est.): 170 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 160 ft

Camaro ZL1:
C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 4.0 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 8.9 sec
Zero to 150 mph: 21.7 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 12.3 sec @ 118 mph
Top speed (drag limited, est.): 181 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 151 ft

Car vs. car the ZL1 wins. Add the human factor and it's anyone's game.
